My 23 year old Yellow Nape returns to me after 15 years away

Hi all, I’m Dawn, from Seattle, WA.

It’s a long story, but today my 23 year old Yellow Nape Amazon Puck returned to me after 15 years in another home. Needless to say, I have all the feelings, from nervousness to excited to in love to overwhelmed. If you ever wondered if your bird’s memory is that long, I’m here to tell you it definitely is. He was regurgitating for me within 10 minutes (which his “Grandma” he’s been living with for the last 15 years says he doesn’t do for her,) and was saying phrases they hadn’t heard in years that I taught him within minutes. He was eager to get to me, and has been reluctant to be put down every time I’ve picked him up. He’s letting me pet his nape, and is stepping up and off willingly (well, especially up, anyhow.) He was playing with toys and even eating by bedtime, and starting grinding his beak contentedly when I covered the cage. So everting has gone so far way, way better than I’d imagined!

Anyhow, I anticipate needing a lot of support and encouragement as I get to training him and get to know him again. I’m eager to learn new things and recall the old, and to create the best possible home and relationships for Puck.

Thanks,
Dawn
Seattle, WA

Thank you for sharing this perfectly lovely story! So often, members come with troubles and needing advice for bad situations - it's such a pleasure to read a happy, hopeful tale of a reunion like this one! I'm so glad Puck has settled back with you so quickly and hope everything goes smoothly for the two of you going forward.

I have a feeling there's a lot more to Puck's story and, if you choose to share it, I bet there are some lovely photos of him as well? We do love photos, and I especially since Amazons are not common here in Oz.

Thanks again for the lovely story - my Barney, Madge and Rosetta send happy squawks to their new friend, Puck. :)

A hardy welcome to Parrot Forums for the both of you!

Thank-you for reminding us of just how long an Amazon and likely most all Parrot's memories are. Clearly, the both of you had a strong, loving relationship to begin with and it is wonderful that it can now continue.

Please take the time to read both of the highlighted Threads at the top of the Amazon Forum. The understanding Amazon Body Language will provide a reminder of those basic hints your Amazon is providing. It will be interesting to hear of what additions your Amazon has added. Second, please take the time to read: I Love Amazon - ... This huge Thread will provide you and near any Parrot Owner with a vast wealth of insights into loving and living with their Parrots.
Again welcome back to being owned by an Amazon and the Parrot Forums!

Amazons Rule!

Welcome Dawn and Puck.
Was your YNA name Puck for a play by any chance? "A midsummer nights dream"
That was the first thing I thought of when I read the name.
Would love to hear/read the whole story someday when you have time to put it down.

Very cool! Glad he is back!!!

You don't want to encourage regurgitation (I would try not to attend to it). If he is doing that, you may want to make sure that he doesn't think of you in a sexual way. Make sure he has no access to dark or shadowy places in or around his cage (huts, under furniture, low ledges, boxes, bedding, blankets/pillows, under clothing etc) and that you only ever pet him on the head and neck. The rest is sexual.

Congratulations!

Welcome!! I’m so excited to read this story, what a heartwarmer!

You’ve landed in the best place possible. This forum is filled with amazon snobs and...those OTHER non-amazons...ready and willing to support you every step of the way.

What kind of diet will you be feeding puck moving forward?

Thank you for an amazing story of reunion, Dawn! Looking forward to pics and Puck's demeanor the next few weeks. Curious if settling in to a routine alters any behaviors.

I was so happy to read your post and teared up hearing how well you were remembered. I've lost a bird, a CAG, and hope against hope someday, some way, someone finds a way to reunite us (although I can't see how it would happen with multiple border crossings and the things we face here). In the meanwhile, I'm so happy for you!
