Cinnamon Turquoise Green Cheek Conure
Hi,

I'm a new owner of a Cinnamon Green Cheek Conure, a first time bird owner... and new to this forum!

I got my conure 5 days ago, after a lot of researching. I originally was looking at an Alex (a conure was the first breed I was interested in though).. and when I met this little guy / or girl (awaiting DNA test).... I fell in love.

I got him from a bird shop in Victoria, he/ she was already hand raised and I am told is 10 weeks old.

He is great with everybody - the shop he was at used to have him out all the time, with different people holding him etc.... so, so far it's been a fairly good transition and he has taken well to his new environment.

I'm obviously learning and getting used to his body language etc which is why I'm here, to learn as much as I can!

I can't wait to get the DNA test back so that I can name him / her! So far I have in mind if a male, Lenny... if a female, Lola or unisex names - Charlie, Willow or Coco.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what their conures favourite toys are -- please let me know! He LOVES my computer.... and I don't really want my buttons chewed off! He actually gets nippy at me when I take him off the keyboard, so I'd love to get something for him that resembles a keyboard and buttons he can chew for his own....

I'm looking forward to reading what people have to say and any tips anyone can offer :)

Hello and welcome to you and your new baby!
My conures love Balsa wood, cardboard, vine balls and anything paper like cupcake holders, basically anything they can shred that is made from safe materials.
I'd love to see pictures of your new baby!

Hey Samara, and the forums welcomes you and your CGCC, (He/She). I have a baby umbrella, and although she loves to chew on wood, I found something she loves very much.....

She loves for me to place these on her table top play area, and she goes from one to the next attempting to solve the puzzles. At first it was overwhelming for me, although these Chinese puzzles came with instructions, I had to put them back together as quick as she could solve them. They are shiny, they are metal, their not small as in choke hazard, and she solves some, and tosses others. Their are 16 puzzles in a pack, for like $9.00 through amazon, if you have Prime you get free shipping. I also use Chinese finger traps as I detour her from chewing on items I don't want chewed. She of course puffs up and hisses and nips at the finger traps, but all in all gets the idea, and I find them very useful for a young bird in training and learning. Hope this idea helps..... and I'll look foreword to seeing you around the forums and following your adventures.

I just want to mention that if ordering these, make sure they are stainless and not zinc, and that a bird can't get any open that they may get their beaks caught in.

Hi, new member!
A real looker!
Finger traps- I got 100 for 3 dollars!
Besides the metal, those puzzles pose a threat of entrapment! If the metal is safe, only use while you have full supervision!

Thanks for the info so far everyone!

Also, what might be some “treats” to offer?

I’ve been experimenting and offering different types of fruit and veg to see what he/she takes to (pumpkin, broccoli, beans, corn, carrot, strawberries, apple, cauliflower, peas)....what are some other things your CGCC love?

He started a bit of nipping this afternoon... and I’ve been reading bits and pieces about when they move in, that nipping can start.

I’m thinking of getting a naturally made play stand too...I’m still finding a routine as to how to juggle with a cheeky conure and still get things done around the house (+ I have a 2 year old!) .... guess this will take some time to settle.

Is it best to have music/ sound on in the background too?

I’ve noticed that one side of is wings is also longer - could that be how they were cut??

Welcome welcome!!

My birds love plastic bottle caps and pen caps. They also love chewing anything wood, paper, cardboard, and anything I am paying too much attention to. :)

Welcome to you and your beautiful conure!!!!
Conures love to untie knot's! I read this and tried it, abd found it to be true!!!
Conures can go through a nippy stage, but consistency, calmness and understanding and reading their behavior can get you past this. Most recommend taking the bite( heck yes it hurts) but don't react. So no in a calm voice, and shun them for a few seconds, if no other pets in the house you can set them in the floor and turn your back, them turn back have them step up and go about your business like it never happened. I just mentioned this because nips can happen, and a bad response can lead to your bird afraid of your hands or you afraid of your bird. Also as your bird grows up it can become territorial of the cage, aggressive biting to defend the cage, but still awesome loving bird away from the cage. So unfortunately when the sweet babies grow up and this happens people think their bird has turned mean, and never get it out again! Ugh.... So as a new owner of a baby bird I just wanted you to have a heads up so you understand and can work with them ( if) this happens to you.
