Tomato - Greenwing Macaw
Hi!!! I've been lurking around on here for a while but finally decided I should introduce myself, since you guys all seem nice.

A couple of months ago I became the owner of a young Greenwing Macaw, Tomato. She's the first bird that I've ever owned, which I know, I know, way to throw myself into the deep end. That being, things have been going well these last couple of months and she's remarkably well behaved compared to most of the other birds I've dealt with.

Before getting her I did do a lot of research. Like ridiculous amounts of research to make sure I knew, at least in theory, what I was signing myself up for. I also had the luck to volunteer at a zoo and babysit some of my neighbours' birds, which is how I got experience with handling large birds.

I am always looking to learn more, and I would love to hear any suggestions or recommendations anyone has.

I look forward to hearing from you and being part of the community!!

Hello! New Macaw owner here too!! I felt the same way (about posting)!! I had smaller birds growing up, but this is my 1st large bird. Merlin is a 19 year old B&G Macaw, and I got him from a rescue. Have had him for about a month now, and he is a total Mama's Boy!!

I did alot of research also, but really the bird chose me - and plunged feet first into the exciting world of these loving balls of energy. LOL Nice to meet you and looking forward to hearing what advise others can offer.

Merlin is so cute!!! Thank you for sharing the picture! It's nice to meet you and your bird as well.

I totally understand about the bird choosing you!! I was not planning on getting a Greenwing macaw when I started looking for a parrot, but Tomato showed up and she decided for me, lol.

Tomato's still a baby, almost a year old. So I get to look forward to a long and exciting journey with her. Tomato has a bit of a weird history since she was raised at a research facility, so that's my theory of why she's so well behaved.

Welcome to the forum cnidarian and Tomato, this forum is a great place to do some research, believe it or not, every time I had a question, I would google it, and it brought me to a post on this forum, after more of those encounters than I cared to count, I decided to join the forum and now conduct my searches directly from the forums search bar. Enjoy your stay, and as was previously stated, we just adore pictures here, look foreword to meeting and reading more about Tomato. By the way, what part of the country are you in? I didn't see it next to your name, you probably haven't filled in your profile information yet though.

Welcome to the forum! What an adorable bird and an adorable name! You've inspired me to now name my future macaw after a fruit.

That's just your classic bat bird pose.... My GW mac generally plays upside down hanging by one toe... It's normal. They're goofy.
