Birds in the same room as dryer

Hi all,

I just moved to a new apartment and the kitchen, living room, and dining room are all one big room. The washer and dryer are in the room and my two cockatiels will be in the room. I use unscented laundry detergent and don’t use any fabric softener or dryer sheets, however I am curious if they can be in the same room as the dryer. . The vent for the dryer goes outside, but I am worried about the dryer giving off fumes. I called my vet and they didn’t give me a straight answer. Has anyone been in a similar situation where their birds were in close proximity to their dryer?

Thank you!:yellow1:

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
One consideration is whether the dryer is electric or gas. Improper combustion and/or venting with gas may permit noxious exhaust contamination. In either case, internal temperatures are raised and the potential presence of teflon/PFOA in conjunction with high heat is problematic.

If you can determine the absence of teflon/PFOA in the heating elements, one hurdle is crossed. A carbon monoxide detector will sound alert to the presence of deadly gas.

Do you have options for another location for your cockatiels?

Thanks for your reply. It is an electric dryer so that’s one thing I don’t need to worry about. I emailed the manufacturer and am waiting to hear back if the dryer contains PFOA. It’s a one bedroom apartment so the only other place would be the bedroom, however I don’t think that would help much since it’s only a door separating them if there are any fumes. Worst case scenario is I don’t use the dryer and if I need to I’ll just go to the laundromat.

The heated air (cloth dryer section) is a closed unit. Air is pulled into the unit and exits the apartment through the vent hole to the exterior of the home.

- fresh air intake from room
- air heating chamber (electric or gas)
- clothing drum
- filter
- exterior vent

Unless the vented air is directed into the home (was a big thing twenty+ years ago) or the pipe is not properly connected, there is very little likelihood of Dryer air finding its way into the house.

See and follow Scott's recommendation regarding the detector!!!
