I'm Amber .. 37yo/married 16yrs to hubby/we have a 14yo/2 small dogs/from Ohio & we just bought an Amazon off of Facebook .. the previous owners had him approximately 2yrs & they got him from a bird rescue (he lived in a frat house originally so he prefers females) .. he has been w me less than a month .. his original name is Carlos but I want to change it .. he is only 4 years old so it shouldn't be a big deal since he is so young .. we were told he's a male but not 100& sure .. I plan to DNA later on .. also not sure of type of Amazon but a friend online knowledgeable in parrots says a lilac-crowned Amazon & from what I saw on Google I think I agree .. I APPRECIATE & WELCOME ALL NAME SUGGESTIONS!! THANK U :green2:

Hello Amber and Welcome to the ParrotForums!

Congratulations, glad you join us.

If I were you, I would do the DNA test ASAP, and once you have the correct information, you could name him/her properly. ;)

Also, names are very personal. While you are waiting on the DNA results, his/her personality will come through and make the naming that much easier. Just a thought.

Here are some links to get you started:

Good Luck!

I would love to know ASAP unfortunately DNAing is not a quick thing & he needs a name ASAP lol

I don't really have any hobbies .. I'm actually a homebody type person hence why I bought him lol also bcuz he was only $50 & my fear was he would end up in wrong hands at that cheap of a price & I missed having a parrot around after my gcc Lola passed a few years back

Your Amazon has had a terrible past and IMHO s/he should receive a New Parrot (to your home) examination by an Avian Professional ASAP. Amazons in highly stressful situations, extremely poor diet and likely limited sleep can pick-up an illness with ease.

Also, with the age of your Amazon, s/he is either just entering its first Hormonal experience of will be shortly. This period of time will find your young Amazon faced with dealing with sudden chemical /hormonal on-rushs. This can be seen as slight changes in mood to extensive changes, like switches from Sweet to Green Killer. They can suddenly rush in or build slowly. Its not unlike the early teen years with Humans. Just give your Amazon space and watch first the spin-up and then settling back-down. Please understand that your Amazon has No Control of when and for how long.

Names, as noted above, is highly personal and if you have to select a name now, just make it non gender specific. FYI, there is a large number of Parrots on Parrot Forums and around the World that have been DNA tested of late and only than found that he is a she or she is a he. Honestly, they don't care.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome aboard, Amber! If you are able to upload images, we may be able to closely identify your amazon's nominal variant.

As suggested, names are personal with literally a universe of possibilities. If he appears to recognize "Carlos," perhaps something phonetically similar to ease the transition. If not, little doubt he will learn to recognize something totally different!

Welcome and be welcomed.

Sailboats is giving you great info there.

gender neutral names are a good bet if you are not having your amazon sexed.
Pick a few, let your S/O pick out of a hat.

TV shows or movies you like? Favorite actor, musician, magician, or politician? Favorite childhood teacher or hero?

This bird will be ruling your life going forward, presumably. What about Ceo (CEO) or "Your Highness"?

Or, what do you Hope For in the bird - or, in your life? Success, Joy, Love? Or what about a Virtue name using a foreign language of you choice?

Oh and don't worry about gender of names Unless You Want to. I named my green budgie Jefferson when I was convinced he was a girl; once that name came to me, that little birdie could Only be Jefferson, regardless of gender.

Thanx for all the feedback so far. I have owned a parrot before - but not an Amazon. I'm learning. He has a very nice large cage currently. I have also ordered him a few fun things along w basic necessities & I plan to switch him soon bcuz the food they had him on is not that great. (3D brand parrot food) I always fed Zupreem brand prior but not sure what I'm officially switching him to. I didn't want to overwhelm him. I know basic do's & don't. I know he needs fresh vegetables & a little fresh fruit along w daily diet. I'm aware he needs time & space to adjust. I have been handling him very little but talking to him & giving plenty of attention. He lives in my master bedroom which is where I am majority of time I'm home - which is a lot. I was told he prefers females so I don't let hubby or son try to handle him right now. I leave the cage door open at all times when I'm home & he generally stays on it. His temperament is tricky. He tries to bite if u try to get him to step up but once he is on me he allows scratches on the head gives kisses plays w my hair talks in my ears etc. I do not push him to let me hold him but I've currently had goal of handling him once a day. If he lunfes at me to bite I back away but talk softly to him & usually he steps up after a few attempts without trying to bite. I got him bcuz I miss having a bird around. I want the absolute best for him. I added a few pics to my album if anyone wants to go look.

I forgot to mention he says a ton of words & phrases along w many sounds. He amazes me on how vocal he is!! I've given him an organic almond each time he does something great. I plan to use those as treats bcuz he seems to really like them. He did not care for Zupreem "Real Rewards" tropical mix. He throws them down lol

Honestly, gender matters in 2 scenarios with parrots- first for those who plan to breed birds obviously gender matters then and also with female parrots who lay infertile eggs, which can cause health issues (female amazons are not a species prone to laying infertile eggs FYI). Beyond that, your bird neither cares nor has any concept of human names or whether you call it a he or she. Some hormonal behaviors may vary between males and females, but the same methods for handling hormones apply to both. If you want to get a DNA test, feel free, but it’s not necessary. Pick whatever name you like better too. It may help if it sounds similar to Carlos, if that’s the name he already recognizes.

My rescue amazon came named and we were told he was DNA tested as a male at some point. We’ve never confirmed he’s a boy but have always presumed him male. Don’t really care either way. Also kept his name, but that’s more because I suck coming up with names and Kiwi is a pretty common name for a parrot. It’s not my favorite name but after calling him Kiwi for almost 11 years, I could imagine ever having called him anything else.

Several folks here have suggested choosing a name similar to the prior name ,Carlos, to make an easy transition. However if you choose some other un-related name - for example, if you decide to name him "Mitchum" - to change the name smoothly, you could call her "Carlos-Mitchum" a couple weeks, before dropping the "Carlos," and then just continue with only new name "Mitchum."

(Then, of course, you'd repeat the process again with another name, after you decide to Not name your birdie after a men's antiperspirant after all. :p )

My wife has a million names for our GCC, Orrin. We agreed to stop calling the bird Orrin if we discovered that he was actually a she—we thought she was a he before the dna test—and, in accordance with the terms of the informal, oral agreement between husband and wife, we agreed to call her Orry (instead of Orrin) if we found out the bird was actually female. Well, I confess: I breached that contract, because my wife’s name is Lori: Lori, Orry, Lori, Orry. Too much potential for confusion, even though I ordinarily call my wife babe. So I still call her Orrin. And my wife has a plethora of names for Orry.

Lori calls Orrin Orry, when she isn’t calling her a list of other names, depending upon her mood, including, but not limited to:

1. Scootcha
2. Scadoodle hoppper
3. Freddy Foo Foo
4. Stinker
5. Little Stink
6. Goo
7. Googly bird
8. Skirch
9. Princess Petunia
10. Chicken bird
11. Kapooch
12. Skircha
13. Skircha, skircha, skircha!

I have a few pet names for Orrin too. When she puts her wings up, I tremble with fear and call her a “tough bird.” Delicately, I put her wings down. There is no need for that! Or, when she does her war dance, I call her “chief crazy feather.”

Moral of the story. Although I am by far NOT an expert, being a first time bird owner myself, I’m not sure that pet names matter as much as the bond between parront and pet. Our GCC, Orrin (aka see list) responds to the sound of our voices, not necessarily the words we use. When words have an important context—such as command words—that is of course a different story. We use consistent command words. I realize that my opinion on this subject is probably the minority view. My opinion is that pet names aren’t as important as we may think, and that what’s really important is the bond between parront and pet. I may be wrong, of course, but that is my two cents.

Peaches, a six month old Sun Conure.
Names are so important. I usually come up with names one of three ways, something that describes their personality, a character they remind me of from a movie or something based on their appearance. Movie names are my favorite as I had a dog named Flash, a lizard named Tiny Gecko, (instead of Tiny Dog from Secret Life of Pets) or a bird named Peaches which came from watching Ice Age. Can you tell a few of your favorite movies, or the three things that sound out the most about your Amazon? What do you like most about his appearance? Maybe I can think of a few names based on what you tell me. :)
