Hello everyone, and thank you for having so much information on your site. I am looking into getting a black headed caique, or a cuddly conure in the next week or two and I've had a hard time getting correct information about birds and ownership.

I guess I should introduce myself, I'm Sam and I live in Alaska. I am on the final few steps of building my own home and I'm looking for a friend to share it with. I am a veterinary assistant at a local clinic and studying to be a tech, specializing in birds!

I love animals, and birds are my favorite, they have amazing personalities. Now that I'm just about finished after a very long year and a half, I'd like to relax. I know bird ownership isn't very relaxing, but I would love to give it a shot.

I am looking for a bird that will enjoy playing with me, sitting on my shoulder, and even experience a little bit of Alaska. I live on three acres and have no neighbors around so an aviary will be next summer's project! I am looking forward to foraging, and making toys since I'm a half decent woodworker. But for the time being, the project is finding a feathered friend that will fit me and how I can make sure they're safe.

I am very excited to start this journey and ready to put in the hard work to have a friend for a very long time!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome aboard, Sam! You seem well suited for parronthood. Conures are extraordinarily popular and may be ideal candidate. Not sure what options you have for species selectivity, depending on location.

What info do you need? We all are sure to help if we can!!

Everything you say makes me think you will be a great parront!!!

Hello from Florida all the way to Alaska!!!

Whatch out for mosquitoes in your outdoor avairy, I'd add screening to the outside of the avairy so the parrot can't chew, but protects from those terrible bitting insects!

Welcome! A conure would likely be a good fit from your description - I can’t speak to Caiques as I’ve never had one. Lots of great info here and please ask any questions you have - this is a friendly group with a ton of combined knowledge to draw on :)

I am leaning tawords a ciaque mostly because of intelligence, and how they aren't typically as loud as conures. However, I do love a pet that is very cuddly and likes to hang out with me as I'm doing chores or homework. I think I would forgo a sun and look for a pineapple green cheek. I know I would be happy with either choice, I just want to give a nice bird a home!

I totally didn't think of the mosquitoes! There's so much to be concerned about its crazy.
