Hello:
Kelly & I are new here, Kelly, my wife has always been one to rescue animals. We currently have 2 Cat's (brother & sister) 14 year's old, and another 3 year's old, we also have a Bull Terrier that has "problems" but well worth the love we get in return, he is now 5 year's old and several other's over the years.

We are soon to change from from dreaming of owning a Amazon Parrot, ( for a many years) to owning a Yellow Naped Parrot. We were made aware of a Bird in our small town of needing a new home. let me say up front, we are somewhat "blind" and looking for advice for "first encounter" to introducing "Mondo" to his new home.
Kelly, met him a few day's ago, I will meet him tomorrow. Mondo is 8 to 9 years old, has lived in a Furniture Store for at least the past 5 years and quite comfortable with people. He is a talker and somewhat of a showoff! , the 15 minutes Kelly spent with him was memorable!

I have burned up the internet the past week, and feel Kelly & I will be well suited parent's to Mondo. Just have so many concerns for his safety with our lifestyle, like...burning a fireplace, candles, food??, I understand respiratory problems can be a concern? Also, any pointer's on how we should approach him??

I am a member of several "Car" site's, I can't believe it took me this long to find this site.
spent a few hours reading the forums, some great info!

Thanks: Gary

It sounds like you will be very lucky to be parents for Mondo. On first encounter I would generally approach slowly and allow the bird to come to you. Since he is at a furniture store he's probably use to all types of people and shouldn't be very skittish. All birds seem to be pretty different and can take awhile to adapt to their new surroundings. Are you getting a new cage for Mondo or will he come with his own cage? If he has a cage currently that you will be bringing home with him it may be less of a change for him since he's already familiar with his immediate surroundings and will just need to get use the solitary living of a house instead of in a store. Also, find out what the current owners are feeding him and try to continue with a similar diet so he doesn't receive too many changes at once.

The most important thing to remember with a bird is patience, patience, patience! As long as you work with him and bond with him you should be fine. Congratulations!

See siggie :)
Congrats!
Things to avoid are Teflon ( non-stick pans ) pans, cigarettes and scented candles.
All of the above will kill your bird.
All parrots need a varied diet consisting of seed, pellets, fruits, cereals and vegetables.
Good luck and research as much as you can!
And welcome to the forum!

Congratulations! It's so exciting.

There are so many resources that it can get overwhelming. One of our members (Spiritbird) recommended Parrots for Dummies when I frist got our birds, and I highly recommend it for first-time parronts (even experienced ones). You can usually find it for not much money at used book stores.

Also search some of the categories here in our forum.

Good luck and share pics when you can.

Congratulations. I have friends that have a 28 year old yellow nape... Sugar is something else.
After being around Sugar for several years and get the chance to take care of Suga when my friends house burned down for several months is the reason I know have Abby..
As others have said your life will change.
Remember parrots are flock animals... they need and want to be in the center of things.
and they will reward you everyday with their love...

just read and ask questions... this is a great forum with great people.
