I'm no vet, but I'm sorry, I don't see how this bird could survive this. You or your parents need to take it to a vet immediately. I can't imagine how much it is suffering.

I don't understand why people have birds they can't afford to look after.

I would take it to the vet and abandon it. Say you found it if you have to. They may just euthanize it, but honestly I don't think there is another option and it would end its suffering.

Don't let this happen again.

Hello, StrayJoe, and welcome to the Parrot Forums family. I wish it could have been under better circumstances.

That looks like a terrible injury and will quite possibly be fatal if not treated by a vet. I can't stress enough that if your parents can, those injured birds should be taken to a vet. Or, failing that, they should perhaps be surrendered to a local avian sanctuary or some such who might be willing to care for them. Keep in mind, also, that some vets might be willing to work with you and your parents on a payment plan.

In the meantime, first thing you need to do is separate the mother from the babies. And then work to stop the bleeding. Corn starch can help with this, or flour if you don't have CS, though you'll have to be VERY careful since the wound is in such close proximity to the budgie's nares. You don't want any inhalation of that stuff, as birds' respiratory systems tend to be very delicate.

Again, this really is a job for a vet.

How old are these babies? Are they eating independently of their mother just yet? Are they on solid foods? If not, you will also need to take over feeding using bird formula. Respond as quickly as you can, and hopefully one of our site's breeding experts will be able to help you out as well. The temps for the formula are very important as well. Too hot will burn their crops. Too cold will risk the formula hardening in their crops.

I'm hoping the best for those babies.

The birds are eating solid food already without the mother feeding them, i went to the vet an hour ago to see if i could pay later when i got my paycheck but they said that they dont do that and that i have to pay on the day they take him in to take care of them and help with the injuries or they wont do anything.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for reaching out for help.
Unfortunately this injury is beyond our ability to help you .... So sorry.... It's possible that humane euthanasia might be the kindest thing that can be done.

Seperate the babies from the parents. Most likely the parents are driving off the babies so they can breed again. This is a normal behavior for the parents, but unfortunately they can't drive off the kids because they are all in a cage together, so that's why things turn violent.. or as young chicks the parents sense ilnnes or an abnormalities and kill that chick to save the rest. This happens in mammals too like dogs and cats. ......

I would urge to stop breeding the adults. Also take a look at cage size, smaller cages lead to more issurs. Often times parakets/ budgies are kept in way to small a cage for this very active species. If your parakeets are just sitting in their cage , it's to small, they will really move around play and become active in a larger cage.
Good luck honey. I know this is a terrible thing to go through.

Euthanasia is the hardest thing to face, and a burden in hearts , but sometimes it is the kindest thing we can do for our friends. You have learned a hard lesson. The way to pay it forward in remembrance of this innocent life, is to prevent it from ever happening again. And share this with us will hopefully help prevent for other people who have babies that have kept them to long with parents. Or prevent them from just letting their parakeets breed in the first place.

Hello StrayJoe,

Welcome to PFs. I am glad you joined us and I am sad this is the reason. Thank you so much for reaching out.
If your parents refuse to care for them properly, then after separating them, you should convince them to re-home all of them.

I agree with everyone else, I don't see how this baby can survive without immediate medical care and even then I believe this wound is lethal. Poor baby.
Birds are very fragile especially with injuries.

PLEASE separate the rest, so no more are injured.

I wouldn't call and ask about payment, just bring the bird to an avian vet ASAP and work out the money later. I highly doubt a respected, ethical vet would turn this injured bird away. Just take the bird in, once they see the condition, they won't turn you away. IMHO

Afterwards, have them bill your parents! That's what I would do.

If you are having a difficult time convincing them to re-home, have them read our replies.
But, only after you see to it that this baby is seen by a vet.

Please keep us posted.

Just seeing this thread and I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.

Sometimes parakeets injure/mutilate/abandon the babies so they can continue nesting and laying eggs to keep making babies, which makes it hard to watch when you don't know what to do or how to help.

In the future, the mom/doad bird should not be allowed to breed anymore, take out the nestbox or any bedding provided and let them live in peace without reproducing. Otherwise you will just ned up going through this situation again and again, which will be heartbreaking to watch.

You are doing the babies right by separating them from the parents, and be sure to keep that nestbox away from the mother. If she does lay more eggs, keep them from laying more and keep them from hatching by either boiling them (to stop possible development of embryo), or replace them with dummy eggs. Either way, this hen is not fit to raise more babies with her injuring the previous clutch so badly.
