Green winged macaw (2 years old) Named Zack
Hi I bought a green winged macaw aged 2 years (as told by shop owner) in June. I love him so much more than anyone else in this world. He is untamed and he is so afraid of strangers .i know shop keepers trade macaws and macaws undergo a series of depressing events. So he is happy in his cage and is always dancing but he doesn't let me touch him. He screamed a lot yesterday when I tried to get him out of his cage and is now not even taking food from my hands. I can't even let any Vet for his routine check ups..what should I do?:red::red1::25:

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to you and Zack!! What do you know about this young macaw? You mention "untamed" so perhaps entirely parent raised. Are you his first home? You are perceptive, parrots are influenced by events unknown to you when purchasing.

Macaws are wonderful if not challenging companions, and green wings potentially the sweetest and most congenial. How long have you had him? The transition period can take weeks to at least one month, and will require you to spend a lot of time socializing. I would encourage reading select threads in our macaw forum. Macaw beaks are intimidating, though they are less prone to severe biting than other species. Informative thread: http://www.parrotforums.com/macaws/56384-big-beak-o-phobes-guide-understanding-macaw-beaks.html

First, ensure he is comfortable in his new surroundings. Food is a strong motivator, bits of nuts such as almonds* or walnuts are excellent rewards. There are many techniques to bond and build trust: http://www.parrotforums.com/general-parrot-information/49144-tips-bonding-building-trust.html
Adequate rest of 10 to 12 hours daily is recommended, as is a supply of nutritious food. Fresh veggies and fruits are essential, you can supplement with a quality pellet or seed mix: http://www.parrotforums.com/parrot-...afe-fresh-foods-toxic-food-lists-sprouts.html

Safety is paramount, many household items and scents are deadly: http://www.parrotforums.com/new-mem...friendly-warnings-keep-your-parrots-safe.html

Please keep us advised of progress and ask questions as desired!!

@Scott
He is at my home for about 8 months now
From his behaviour I understood that he is a happy macaw,loves to dance all day long. I give him so much time by sitting near his cage. By giving him Walnuts with my hands,my all family members keep on talking with him but he screams a lot when strangers get near his cage.He doesn't allow us to open his front door and feed him with open door
Yes he has become Hand fed somehow but still he feels comfortable in his own cage and his wings are not clipped
:red1:
I guees I shouldn't force him to become tamed but then I think what will happen if he needs any Vet for beak or nail trimming? Or if I need to change his perch? He is so afraid whenever we try to touch him and becomes depressed
What should I do? 😥😥
And about his food
He only eats
Almonds and walnuts all day...he throws away apples and strawberries and every fruit
