Hi all thanks for adding me.
I am a bit confused by the behaviour of my two conures over the last 3 months. I have a male and female who have bonded well and are housed in a small aviary cage. I have a large nest box in their cage which they love. When I first got the female she became sick with a bacterial infection and I nearly lost her 3 times, finally got her right and now she is healthy and fine. I had to take her away for about a week and the male fretted for her. Now when I go out to see them they screech and run into their best box. They are fine when I am not there and seem happy but I don't understand why they seem frightened of me. My make was always good and was talking to me saying Cookie but now just runs to his box and screeches from inside it. Should I remove the box for a while???? This has been happening for about 4 months.

Welcome to you and your flock!

A question - are you planning to breed them? If you aren’t planning to breed them, a nest box is unnecessary and won’t be helping them keep their bond with you. It can be more difficult to keep your relationship with them if they are in breeding mode (It is hormone season with my crew right now) - which it sounds like they may be. I can’t tell how long they’ve been with you from your post - but if you don’t have a well established bond with them, it can be harder to maintain a relationship with them once they bond together and want to make babies. So I guess my advice would depend on whether you have breeding plans or not. If you can remove the nest box, it would likely help curb some hormonal behavior. You might consider spending a bit of time with them separately and together if you are wanting to work on a bond with them both. It also takes time for the hormones to subside - so be patient if you decide to remove it, it could take weeks for you to notice any changes. I don’t have any experience with breeding, so others may be able to contribute more :).

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome to you and your pair of conures!

What Jen said! The nest box increases hormonal activity, leading to potential break in your relationship. Some nest boxes are equipped with a sliding door that lowers from outside the cage and blocks entry. Can be a fine solution if you eventually plan to breed. If not, removal is best.

Thank you so much for your advice I believe you are both on the right track with the box. Will remove and wait to see what happens.
