Hi There,
I'm John and I am disabled and wheelchair bound. My wife Rachel is my caregiver. We are at home almost all the time. We don't have any pets at this time. I was raised with birds. When I was young I had a military Macaw. We lived in New Jersey at the time. My Dad was transferred to California and made me give up my bird. After moving into my own place. I got a Cockatoo named Saxxon. I loved him! He went everywhere with me and I had him for 12 plus years. He was my best friend!! He became ill with cancer and I eventually had to put him to sleep. I haven't had a bird since. I am ready to give myself to a bird again and my wife wants to also. So we are looking for a Cockatoo or maybe a African grey. I want a bird who enjoys being held and loved. Must also enjoy going places in the car and seeing other people. Friendly, talkative and outgoing. I know there are a lot of birds needing a home and I have one waiting for the right one. :green1::white1::grey:

Yoda, Green Cheek Conure - Trigger, Congo African Grey
Welcome welcome!!

If you want a bird who loves being held and loved, here's my 2 cents.

I've got a Green Cheek Conure and a Congo African Grey. Our grey Trigger is not your typical grey, so I've been told. I think he imitates Yoda our conure. So both are little clowns and both are utterly addicted to love and cuddles and attention. Yoda is much more loving, affectionate, cuddly, and more insistent on being ON us, rather than just NEAR us, compared to Trigger. I've heard (and from what I've seen) Cockatoos are like conures in that they are clowns and super loving, affectionate, eager for attention and interaction. The two big downsides of a Cockatoo are that they produce a lot of powder which some people are allergic to. If you get one, I highly recommend getting a few HEPA air filters to keep down the dust. The other downside is that if they don't get the attention that the long for and deserve, they often scream or eventually, tragically get self-destructive and a bit crazy. If you can and will give the Cockatoo lots of love and affection and time with/on you, then you'll probably never find a more fun, loving, sweet, and amazing feathered companion than a Cockatoo.

Welcome in any case :) Keep us updated and post pics of your Fid when you have one! :D

Welcome! Glad you joined!
Quakers are considering by many to be as smart as an African Grey ( I think they are close) and as social as a cockatoo ( mine are loving plus, cuddles, but thank goodness like to entertain themselves too) they are confident, mechanical like to build and play with stuff, my Neptune uses words in context.
They are re-homed by the thousand on Craigslist and the like. Because they are smart social and active, they are prone to sever behavior problems if those needs aren't met. They like to make noise normally which makes them good talkers on averaging, but even happy Quakers can make noise a lot. Unhappy Quakers are screaming mess. Also unhappy ones are prone to feather destructive behavior, and Quaker mutilation syndrome, as they are to smart and social to be in a cage all day while you work. An adult Quaker will defend it's cage with Vicious attitude. Has to be accepted and worked around. Out of the cage a wonderful love.

My first Quaker I got from a fantastic breeder. My second I rescued from extreme horrible conditions, my third Quakers was given to my a wonderful college kid, who realized it wasn't the right time to have a loud needy bird.

For you and your situation, I hope you consider them , I think they might suit you. Many Wonder ones need home, some with behaviors issues need rescues, or Florida has many breeders, just make sure the breeder really does take the time with them as a baby.
We do have members new to birds that have gotten pet store, fearful Quakers who have had issues. But I feel confident that with experience, those birds can be turned into wonderful freinds.
You can click my name and look at my albums.

Edit: yep quick craigslist shows some wonderful Quakers needing homes in all parts of Florida.

Can't wait to hear your future parrot story!

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome John an Rachel, thanks for joining and sharing a lovely introduction!

Cockatoos and Greys are quite different, but if you mastered living with a cockatoo, most anything is possible! Perhaps you can visit rescues or pet shops and become better acquainted with a Grey to make the best decision.

Hi Everybody,
Wow!! Thank you for all the awesome welcome!! Rachel and I are very anxious to move ahead with our search fo the bird of our lives. Having had such a wonderful Cockatoo for so long. I am a bit favorites forwards a Cockatoo. But with that said, I also have been exposed to a few greys and I love their outgoing personalities and their loyalty too! So I will see what happens. Rachel is fairly new to the bird world and I don't want her to get jaded by a unruly bird or one that bites. But at the same time I don't want to shelter her from the realities of having such a strong personality as birds are. So I believe there is no better teacher that experience itself. I just hope we are able to find our companion as easily as it was to enter this group. So again, Thank you for all your welcomes and I look forward to our future time together. I have no doubt that these are going to be valuable relationships now and on into the future.

Sincerely, John & Rachel Luiz...

I have a true favorite species, so I will not cloud your choice.

When you are out and about, look for the 'Parrot' that chooses the both of you! They are so much better at selecting than we are as they lock into our emotions...

Try watching for the one that is interested in the both of you. You maybe shocked at just how intuitive they are regarding choosing.

The heart wants what it wants. But I hope you keep an open mind, and have the joy of a parrot choose you!
