Vinnie - Jenday Conure
I finally took the plunge and signed up and thought i'd introduce myself.

I'm Matt had a passion for animals and mainly the feathery kind since I was a kid and that as followed me through to adulthood.

Had tonnes of birds I helped look after when I was a kid including Ducks, Chickens, Macaws, Lovebirds, Cockatiels, Budgies and others.

Last year we adopted a Meyers Parrot from a local wildlife centre as no one was giving him the attention he was looking for. He was mistreated when he was younger and kept in a cage way too small with no toys so did the inevitable in that situation and plucked himself only his head, back and wings he didn't pluck clean. Due to his mistreatment he wasn't flighted either, he sort of knew the dynamics but couldn't put it into practice. I got him hand training and cuddling up in no time which was fantastic.

Unfortunately he lost his balance and started to become very tired and had a lack of strength. After weeks in an exotic vet and emergency centre he passed away from liver and kidney issues at this point we had only had him 3 months. He was my little companion and friend during the days when i'm working from home we loved him a-lot and it was painful to see him go.

We had a cage spare and plenty of parrot related products now so attempted to adopt from various places but due to us having cats (very well behaved ones) no where would except us :(

We took to the internet looking around for parrots who needed a home and found a Jenday Conure who we later named Vinnie.

Vinnie had lived with his brother for around 2.5 years with his then family in an attempt to breed. Yep this is going where you think it is, they found out they had 2 males and decided to get rid of one. Vinnie was no longer wanted.

We decided to give him a home, we have now had little Vinnie for around 4 months. He is an completely untame Jenday but now lives with us and is doing very well indeed.

Vinnie is fully flighted so loves to fly away from us and sit atop his cage watching the world go by. We have managed to stick train him and on occasion he will take a grape from us through his bars, outside of the cage all bets are off and if any part of your body it too close for his liking he takes off. We know this is a long journey we are taking with Vinnie and our aim is one day maybe he would be tame enough to be handled. We also know this may never happen but it wont stop us from loving the little guy anyways.

I've been reading loads of stuff on here and thought i'd finally get involved and maybe ask some questions directly to you lovely people in the know.

Hope you are all having a great day and are staying safe at this very strange time of a Pandemic.

Here is a picture of Vinnie after he decided to bath in his water bowl

What a wonderful introduction, and stunning picture! Thank you for taking a rehome!

Sorry for your losd, it never seems fair that they are rescued and only have the good life for a short while. But do thankful that he had you!

On changing behavior, it's about breaking it down to tiny steps in shape behavior, and teaching the mind to move towards you. This can start by looking at you, then you out a treat in the treat dish, then moving to taking a step towards you and putting a treat in the treat dish, to coming to stand a d wait by the treat dish to get a treat. These seemingly little things are actually teaching the bird to move towards you, positive association. I use the same steps to teach tricks, a treat to look at an object I want them to pick up, working towards a treat if they touch it, then treat if they pick it up, then a treat if they move it. Same for teaching step up to a fearful bird. It's all a fluid Shapiro if behavior, in tiny steps, repeated sever times a day, and adjusted to each harder step.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome Matt and Vinnie! My condolences for the loss of your Meyers parrot. Kudos for adopting from a rescue, a shame you did not have decades with him.
