My sweet Dodo is taking metacam since monday... he is limping since thursday, vet told me to take metacam for 5 days, and call her tomorrow afternoon, and tell her if he’s improving... i still see him limping, he is fine, he screams, play, dance, fly, he is not fluffy, he is fat and is 200gr, he should be 150gr.... now he is on diet. Friday we will make xray, i hope that sedation will be fine, and that there are no tumors, i feel so sad, i cannot imagine to stay without him :(

Hello Dodicchio and welcome to the forum! Please don't apologize for your English, you communicate perfectly :)

I'm so sorry your sweet Dodo is unwell. Did you notice him have an accident with his foot or leg? Did he get it caught in something? If your vet is a certified avian vet Dodo should be ok with a little sedation, although general anaesthetic does always carry some small risk. Metacam is a good remedy for pain or inflammation but if Dodo does continue to limp he will need further examination.

I certainly understand how worrying this must be for you, the people here have very strong bonds with all our birds so you are definitely among friends. I wish you and Dodo all the very best!

In my opinion, any of the vets listed above should be better than a regular vet, although exceptions do exist!
Sometimes, it helps just to Google "avian veterinarian - [YOUR LOCATION]"

I live in Italy, thursday, when i realized he was limping i called his avian vet (he only cut his nails, he never needed a vet in 9 years), to ask him if i could bring dodo to him, he said that he was full and by the phone he told me to give him aspirin. But aspirin is strong for me, how can i give it to dodo? So on sunday i wrote to this girl that is a young avian vet in my city, and she gave him metacam for 5 days, too see if the foot improve, or tomorrow she makes xray. He is fat, maybe could be liver on leg nerve, or some infections. I hope no tumors, but he is fine, as usual. I dont know whats happen to gis foot because i dont live with him anymore, he lives with my parents, i go by him everyday to play and make him fly around. He has a noble cage, so is very big. I hope he will be fine, he has no other syntoms, poop is good, he is not fluffy, he wants to play. I checked his foot for some sore, but nothing. I use leucagel too.

There are 2 vets around here, One in alessandria (the one who said about aspirina) who works with the avian vet in Asti, and this girl here in my city. She worked for 3 years in an avian/exotic veterinary team in Genova, then in Valencia and now she came back here. A boy that i know (he has a parrot oasi) go to her, so i think she is a good vet. now i see with xray whats happen then i will see. Im so scared, i keep crying. Now i just woke up, ita my free day, and i drive by him, my dodicchio ❤️

Well that is good news :) Hopefully Dodo's foot will continue to improve with your continued care and help from the vet!

Wonderful, thanks for an update! Can you share the diagnosis? I ask only because members and guests often Google search for symptoms + remedies and Dodo's issues may help others.

Here i am, sorry for the late answer, but i am working so much and moving into another home :) we think (me and the vet) that he had only leg pain, we didnt do the x ray, because at monday he was fine, now he walk as always and he is fine. He had long nails, i dont know how explain in english, long nails + cage = leg pain. I keep him on diet, he is now 197 gr. After summer we will make x ray as routine check up. With metacam, anyway, all went fine.

No worries, great to hear a positive outcome for Dodo. Very long nails can complicate moving about the cage and potentially cause an accident with soft-tissue damage. Glad the Metacam relieved pain and all is normal.
