Just wanted to say hello. My name is Dale and my Parrot is Rubydoo. She is a Yellow Naped Amazon. I was looking how to trim nails and beak and came upon this site. I wanted to post and thank the gentleman who led me to a dremel at WalMart! Then I lost his thread ): I am glad to find this site. Sometimes I feel alone with caring for my bird. I really don't want to spend 60 bucks to have nails trimmed and beak trimmed at the local bird store. Rubydoo and I have gotten quite close over the years. I wish I knew then what I know now about Parrots. I got here from my sister who no longer wanted her. She was rather feisty back then, LOL We have a pretty good schedule worked out between us now. Hope you are all being safe and are healthy. I will have to post a picture of here soon. Peace:greenyellow:

Welcome to another person owned by a Yellow Nape Amazon.
My Bingo is aprox 35 years old.

For the most part the beak should not need to be trimmed. If it does need to be trimmed (my Orange Wing needed it once) I would not do it myself.
Lots of nerves in the beak.

Looking forward to seeing pictures of your green monster .

Welcome to the forum. Beak you sure not have to trim as they usually do that themselves chewing on wood and etc. Here the thread I think you are looking for.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Welcome aboard Dale and Rubydoo, thanks so much for joining!

Some parronts are able to trim nails without too much drama. For many it is best to outsource the drama! If Rubydoo's beak continuously overgrows, it may be result of chronic illness. A blood panel and consultation with certified avian vet (or equivalent) might put you at ease.

Welcome to ParrotForums!

Within the Amazon sub-forum there is a ton of information regarding the question that is placed in a general Thread. As stated above, we have two excellent Threads at the very top of the Amazon sub-forum that provides great insight.

Based on your general description, it sounds like your YNA is an Adult and as a result, the Understanding Amazon Body Language will be an excellent place to start.

As stated above, it is uncommon for an active, healthy Amazon to require more than a rare clean-up on its beak. And, as noted, it is something you want handled by an Avian Medical Professional. Never a Pet Store Staffer...

Again, Welcome to the ParrotForums!

Here new link to that Rotary tool, it drop to $16.92 now. Of course adapting your bird to it and knowing how to grind down birds nail is important, otherwise let a veterinarian cut nails. Beak sure not need trimming. Trim only the tip of your bird's nail. When clipping a bird's nails/claws, grind down only the sharp pointed tip to avoid cutting into the quick and to avoid causing pain and to avoid bleeding for your bird. I usually have speed in middle to grind nails fast to avoid to much heat built up as to slow can cause heat overtime due to longer time it take. Then use a nail emery board to smooth out edge. Beak being overgrown I would let veterinarian check it out and do tests as could be a health related issue?

A pet store I would avoid unless they specialize in parrots primarily and even then best to take to a more experienced avian veterinarian and usually they are reasonable in price as mines only charge $25 bucks. At times I just let her do it as same veterinarian that come out to rescue and see her around all the time.
