Dolly the Eclectus
Hi,

Firstly let me introduce myself - my name is Stacey and I have a female eclectus parrot named Dolly.

I have never owned a parrot before, and never expected to! However, she ā€˜choseā€™ me - and since I am a huge softy and a sucker for a sob story, she now lives with me!

I donā€™t think I couldā€™ve jumped in to deeper water though as she has many issues....hence why I am here!

I want to offer her the best life possible, I have time and patience- and I do not give up on my pets.....EVER!

So thatā€™s a quick bit about us. Thanks for reading!

Welcome Stacey and Dolly! So glad you found us. It's an amazing thing to be chosen. :) We have quite a few Ekkie parronts around here, happy to help however we can. Ekkies are definitely different from others, but absolutely wonderful IMO. I love them! Please feel free to ask questions. Again, we're here to help. Also, we love pictures here if you'd like to share!

Welcome!

There is a fair number of Eclectus owners on Parrotforum and it is worth your time to read back into the Threads in the Eclectus Subforum. IMHO, it is best to sit near her in her cage or in that neutral place and read those Threads softly, out loud in a comforting place. The goal is simple, you learn and your girl becomes ever more comfortable with you.

I'm an Amazon Snob, but know that Diet is very important for an Eclectus' health and wellbeing. To my understanding, their Diet is heavy on the Veggies side of the spectrum.

Avian Medical Care: If you have not already taken her for a New Parrot Avian Physical, you really need to. The visit should include a Hands on Physical examination, her weight, a gram stain (poop smear) and a full spectrum blood test. This will offer you a clear starting point for future visits. Avian Clinic visits for a Healthy Parrot should be once every fifteen months, all the way down to monthly if you are chancing a medical issue.

Hi,

Thanks for the welcome! I have posted on the eclectus chat and would love any advice you have to give!
Hereā€™s a few pictures of my Dolly taken today, the ā€œchunkyā€ was when she was honking, clicking and grinding her beak at me (which is super cute) [emoji3590]

Honoured to have you on board Stacey. You are Dolly's provider and protector from here on. A huge but WORTHY commitment. I'll follow your thread in the Eclectus section.

Aww....thank you all for your kind comments! She is stunning (not biased)
Yep - she does match the decor, but it didnā€™t even click for me until someone said [emoji23]

I have managed to get Dolly a new cage (the old one was from the rescue and was far too big and it was old and a bit rusty) I got her a selection of perches new toys etc - she has been honking and talking away in it since she got in! So Iā€™m guessing she likes it!!

I'm always talking perch size. Her dowel is to small a circumference for it to be her main spot to sit. A wider perch will support the foot and distribute weight better. Preventing arthritis later in life, and any pressure point Bumble foot issues. The toes shouldn't be curled mostly around the perch like that. Make an ok with your hand and spread it apart about an inch, that probably an ideal size for your bird. I see you have other sizes, but because the cage us kinda smaller abd tge way you have set up, she is going to prefer to perch in that spot. So put the most supportive per h in that spot.

Sorry to go on, its just such a common problem for older medium and large parrots to have joint and foot issues and pain from to small of perches. Since it chronic it takes time fir this to happen, so people don't realize they can prevent it.

Ok such a pretty girl, such a happy storyline

Hi Stacey, I'm confirming what Laura said about perch size. I posted my comments earlier in your Eclectus thread....you are doing great!:)

Hi, thank you for the advice!!

Iā€™m looking at perches now, Iā€™ll add pictures of what I was thinking of and would love everyoneā€™s feedback on which ones I should get! Also, do I take the dowel out?

Also (sorry) has anyone used heated perches? My house is really old so we have cavities under the floor and in the walls for ā€œair flowā€ so it can get chilly. I cover her at night to try and keep her warm, but I was thinking of getting a heated perch to keep her cosy! Iā€™ll add a picture of this too - Iā€™m not going to order anything until I hear back from you guys!

I really want to do right by her and (although my funds are limited) Iā€™m willing to get her anything to make her happy and healthy [emoji3059]

Flat is ok off to one side but nit as main per h. I like the one with holes. I have thst one, forget what its called, but its nice and a good size.

I use a sweeter heater sold on Amazon, tgey are marketed fir chickens. So you can find something similar. Its a radiant heat or infrared heat, not a light. Smallest available, and you still might have set back inches from cage. Works great., I got mine when I lived up north, and just git one fir my freind a couple if years ago even tho we live in Florida. I font have experience with the other heat sources, so I can't advise.

Sorry when I re read my per h post I thought I came off harsh. I just talk blunt, I hate that it can come of harsh. So sorry about that , its just how I share information.

I see you were able to ad pics! Was the problem cured by using links or did you try to add additional images from your computer? If so, problem may be very limited storage space allocated to each member.
