Canadian guy who went to Aus to film parrots

Hi Folks:

I am a Canadian man that traveled to Australia in 2008 with the sole purpose of filming as many species as I could! It was a fantastic adventure. Familiar with several species of Aussie parrots in my heated aviary, it was amazing to see them in their native land flying wild and free! I was wondering if others were interested in wild Aussie parrots as well.

Oh you bet! We have several members that live there. I am sure they will chat with you. Did you have a favorite bird there?
I read about a trip to Brazil to see the bird life there. It is all very facinating to me. Would love to see more of your photos.

Hi Dianne

Thanks so much for the warm welcome. Aussies are great people and super friendly. Without them I would have filmed very little. By logging online and getting help during the entire 6 months I could keep track of where best to go to film certain species. It was the adventure of a lifetime!

My favorite bird was the Princess Parrot. I was told that even paying over $4000.00 US to travel on an outback tour to see the species my chances were slim. Instead I headed off on my own with an experienced mate.

Here are a couple of pictures from my film - Australia Discovering the World of Parrots featuring my favorite. Polytelis Alexandrae. I had a blast in the Gibson desert filming them!

Yeah, Oz is a great place for parrots
I should know because I live here.
Galahs, rainbow lorikeets, rosellas, black cockys, corellas, you name it I see it here pretty much everyday.
Cockatoos are even pests here!
Apparently there used to be wild flocks of budgies round here but I am yet to see them.

They are so beautiful

There's a Princess of Wales Parrot up for adoption at a shelter in my state! He's pretty cool . Those pictures are great! Post more please

Aussie birds are fantastic!!! Very noisey though!

Okay since folks asked for more images its only too fun for me to post some. This is a flock of budgies that were resting in the heat of the afternoon at an outback cattle station in queenland australia. For some reason it seemed the flock was segregated with all of the females roosting together. Not sure what that was all about!

A special hi to all the Aussies on here. Its such a mind-blower to be in a land where parrots fly everywhere free.

Tosher I had the joy of being in just about every corner of your gorgeous country. As you know different parrots live in different regions. Adelaide holds a real special place in my heart. I kept pacing around Adelaide wondering if I had the nerve to catch a small plane out of Adelaide and fly to the South Australia scrub desert to see if I could find and film one of my dream birds. The Scarlet-chested Parrot. Well I booked a return flight having me in the desert for 7 days and it was so so so hot 47 deg C or 118 F. But the result was UNREAL!
I filmed Scarlets for 4 days in a row including 2 males in a scuffle over who got to sit where in the shade. Might be the only moving footage on the planet of wild SCP's showing territorial behavior. Here are a couple of images from being out there: Including the only way to deal with swarms of flies that literally crawl in the corners of your eyes making filming a no go without protection.



South Australia desert is no place for the unprepared and if you get lost basically without water and shade your chances of survival are slim.


It was a dream come true filming Scarlet-chests and for whatever reason all I saw were the brilliantly colored males!

Here was one of my favorite little guys to film. He is only 13 cm long. Can you guess what he is and also Can you guess not only what state I filmed him but what habitat? I love these little guys and I found that they are not easy to film!

Yes indeed Hooded Parrots! Male on the left and female on the right. It was so hot here I couldnt even sleep at night. Didnt get below 90 even at 2 AM. Had to take a break after filming here I was so wiped out. Varied Lorikeets wore me out. Flying fast and furious overhead and not landing... argghhh.. But the Hoodeds were worth it all. Only place I saw them here at Nitmuluk National Park in the NT.
