Hello PF!...My name is Marc and I am a new member today to parrot forum...the reason I joined today is because last night my wife brought home a parrot that her co-worker found walking in her backyard. I am trying to identify its species, so that's where your help is needed! I have attached a picture of this cool little guy if someone would please identify that would be awesome. This guy is a awesome addition to our exotic collection...(15 exotic tarantulas, 2 bearded dragons, 1 ball python, 1 kingsnake, 1 leopard gecko..) Glad to be part of your community and thanks in advance for your help! :emoticonc

EDIT: After a little more googling, looks like this guy is a Senegal Parrot...So I am naming him "Sonny"...Any habitat tips would be appreciated! Thanks!

That bird is a Senegal. They are originally from Africa. They are fantastic birds and I am sure there must be an owner somewhere. You can post on parrot911 or look to see if someone put info. there. The bird is in good condition so he is missed I am sure.

he/she looks rather plump, well alot plumper then my nut :) as you said walking i will take it the birds flight feathers are clipped?? but none the less is in great condition, definately a loved pet

so please try to find its owners, as said above, as i do not think its been missing for long and if it was my little nut, even though she is moth eaten, i'd be heart broken

in the mean time, good pellets such as harrisons fine, fresh fruit and veg (NO fruit SEEDS OR SKIN TO BE SAFE except pomegranet) i am sure the owners will be more then happy to foot the food bill, personally i would put *parrot found in local paper, but not saying what type etc, let ppl contact you and discribe there pet!

do not feed chocolate/advocatdo/caffine/alcohol etc

mine has free range of the house, she is flighted but nut is very inquisitive! so spiders on the floor she will pick up etc, even though she is flighted she can run pretty fast, so make sure he not behind you etc when you are closing the door, sittin down etc

not sure why the tail is clipped as well?? if wings are clipped?? especially to that extent

but as one side looks all messed up, i'd imagine it was to balance the look, after accident to other side??

Please guys don't assume that the poor bird has been neglected because his/her feathers are messy. From the pics the little guy looks in very good condition. His wings are cut at a reasonable length. In fact that is how an Avian Vet taught me how to clip. And as far as his tail goes many birds just love to hang out on the side of their cage & can do much damage to the tail. From what i can see maybe he is growing a new tail in.

Given how tame the bird is i would think the owner is very upset their baby is missing. I would also think that he was not to far from his home where he was found especially if he couldn't fly.

please don't assume the bird was badly treated, if it had it would have been very wary of ppl!
i know its gonna be easy to do, as these birds have a way of making you really want to keep them, but they do live up30yrs! if not more and can have extreme behaviours when in season, as i know only too well

i've inserted a very recent picture of my nut, she looks terrible! with her plucking and now her molt, you can see the feathers she has chewed! every single feather on her body!

she is alot better now, as her season is over, but i am hoping when she is in season again, she wont be as bad!

but if she flew outta my house and some1 came across her, she will land on them, she has no fear of ppl, she is a power onto herself! she is flighted, i'd be more worried that because she has such strong evidance of pluckin, ppl will assume she has done it out of bordom, or been neglected, niether of which she is.

but the new owners will be certain for the simple reason she is a star! entertaining, has her own quirks, chase toes, good with small children (only nips them) will fly to anyone and preen them

so please put an advert in local paper as i have suggested, just saying parrot found, if it was my nut, i'd be heart broken! she makes up a large part of my life already, and that of my son and man. she isn't a pet to me, she is a member of the family (a very willfull one at that)

I understand that someone is missing him/her, but why are you guys making excuses for the obvious clipped tail..?..It was most definitely cut and each one is a different length...that's not good parrot keeping in my book. And also, I do not believe in cutting a birds wings whatsoever...So to find this guy all hacked the heck up does make me wonder...I've seen many of well mannered highly trained birds that were still neglected and poorly kept....i will still pursue the owner as that is what I would want done if i lost a friend..

I have know people to trim off a tatty or broken tail on a clumsy parrot. No big deal as the feathers do fall out & grow a new one.

Another way is to take a bird to the Avian Vet & have all the tail feathers pulled out & the bird will have a whole new tail in 6 weeks.

I am not making excuses & neither should you. You don't know the birds owner & you are only assuming & yes i agree we all have come accross a neglected parrot mainly due to being uneducated on the care of parrots & still those silly old wife's tales.

But it's really lovely that you care so much.

You are right about that. The tail is practally gone. Without the tail feathers the bird has no balance to fly. They will be slow in growing back with a molt. If you have other animals this bird will need to be kept safe from then because it will not be able to escape. Your next step should be an avain vet for a health exam.
Guess he knew a good home when he saw it.

you are right...I guess there are many factors for the tail..obviously cut, but for what reason is what challenges me...I guess to me there is no good reason to take scissors to a bird.

i dont agree with clipping, but it does not make ppl bad parrot owners

and i doubt that a neglected or abused bird will be well mannered or trainable! simple reason is these are highly intelligent creatures, they are not like cats or dogs

the previous owners did there bird a favour clipping him/her, simply as these birds will find it very hard to survive in the wild, they may have no instincts to avoid cats/dogs, what is food etc and as it was wondering about, it was lucky to have been caught easily and now is in a home, before it even showed any signs of being under weight or weathered

as i think you are plannin to keep him, you need a vet check for its sex! and general health. consider if you want to have children, as these birds really get up set when there home lives change dramatically, they also have very strong jealous reactions.
they need to be well so******ed
they need routine
you need to get it a large cage/ regular toys and vet checks
you cannot treat it as a favourate play toy and then put it into the back ground!
you will have to consider its care when you go away! you cannot just ask a family member friend to sit your bird, as in living with your bird, they cannot just pip in to feed it, they will need bird experiance
you come home from work tired?? tough you still need interaction time with your bird and thats just off the top of my head

You know what sirsid people do some really crazy things to their parrots. Only a week or so ago there was a guy in Australia that took his pet eclectus male for a ride on the freeway, thats fine except the poor bird was hanging on for grim death onto the wiperblades. This idiot was clocked at doing 100 kilometer.

This guy had an excuse he had no brain. Still waiting to hear what the RSPCA & Police are going to do with this crazy person.

most likely we will keep this guy/gal..but i did post a few ads for the owner to respond to...
He/she will definitely not get a lack of attention in this house...my wife and I make it a point to ensure all our critters get personal attention and are literaly spoiled. We have 15 different tarantula species from various countries, a python, a kingsnake, 2 rats, 2 bearded dragons, and a fish tank full of african Cichlids....If the owner comes forward thats great, but if not, I can guarantee this beauty will be well taken care of. I plan on having a cage, but allowing free roam once he/she is able to fly again.
