hello, i typed about three paragraphs before but it didnt go through so im re-typing, sorry its kinda short but its late lol. well im a teenager and not getting a parrot for at least 10 years, so in my spare time i learn as much as i can about parrots. i am looking for a macaw that is gentle, easygoing, and has a steady predictable temperment. i was thinking about red fronted macaws, blue throated, calusha (BG x Hyacinth), or emerald (hyacinth x buffons). also which of the parents tend to dominate the size and personality of the hybrid macaws. i am open to any other sugestions. im leaning towards the red fronted macaw. i plan to get a macaw as the last member of my flock so i have time to gain experience, and is height dominance a myth or a real behavior? thank you so much for any help :D!

Height dominance depends on the bird. So it is real. My cockatiel doesn't care what height he is at and won't fight to be left alone or anything. My lovebird on the other hand knows that being high means that he can't as easily be put back in the cage.

There is no such thing as height dominance is parrots. I have never seen it in my aviary birds or any of my companion parrots. here is a link from Steve Martin explaining all about why some people think their bird is dominant.

http://www.naturalencounters.com/images/Publications&Presentations/Height_Dominance-Steve_Martin.pdf

This my friend, is an excellent article, I have read it before, and many others like it. I cant imagine why people are so into the height dominance belief. It is just not something flock birds do, it has never been proven that this behavior exists, and the only people you hear preaching it are those people who themselves have dominance issues, you ask any professional that has studied parrots, and other flock birds in their natural habitat, and you will get exactly the response Mr. Martin writes. HAHA no such thing! I have asked a few, and got that exact response.

wow! sorry i didnt come on sooner! i didnt know there were any replies :)! thank you for all the answers :). HRH DI is right they are amazing birds, though so far none have showed up at my pet store, which is suprising because they have all kinds of birds. they even have a vasas and once they had a hawk head. the owner has a hyacinth and a scarlet but they have hybrid macaws, BG, military, scarlet, and even blue throated macaws, but no RFM:(! they even had lead beater cockatoos! any way i was wondering about green wings i hear there great birds does anyone have one?

so far the RFM is in the lead!

RFMs can be hard to find. They're very endangered in the wild, so be sure the breeder's breeding pairs are not wild-caught. Keep looking you may find one at a pet store or rescue. If Texas is convenient for you, our breeder is excellent and I aslo know of a breeder in Colorado.

I have a Green Wing, he is a Huge sweetheart! Very smart and great personality. When I feed him, he will sometimes ask "Is it hot" if he likes it he will turn his head and say "Good" or "Ummm"

I also vote for the RFM. My RFM is so sweet, gentle amd such a clown. She can be loud at times. They have a very shrill call but, I can overlook it since she is a great bird.

Ann may i just say that in 10 years time your situation will be so much different to now & who knows where the future may lead you. In the mean time have your wonderful dreams about what the ultimate parrot is for you. Personally i think it would be hard to choose. If i were a lot younger my ultimate parrot would be a Black Palm Cockatoo but it is illegal for me to keep one in Australia. So i doubt i will ever own one of my own.

Yea I saw on youtube about them being endangered specie. Their nest trees get knocked down. They're picky about a specific tree they nest in. It was sad to watch, also one was sick with PBFD that wasn't known in Black Palm before but because of the situation change where they have to fight living space with other parrots, they contracted PBFD. :/
