Thinking of getting another pet.

I had a coworker offered me a Chinchilla at a cheap price but I do not know everything about them save they get dust baths, can not be in hot temperatures, ect. It was a sweet little fellow and soft but I passed due to me needing to be more knowledgeable and ready. While I am not in a rush I know I would like to add a furry little critter to the gang. I seen baby ferrets here and there in town but I do not consider getting a ferret because of the chance it could hurt/ kill Captain Jack. Right now I am leaning towards a Chinchilla or rats. I am not in any rush but would value any input and information you can give.

I would look for a vegetarian furry critter. Rats and ferrets have both been known to kill birds, and unlike big animals like dogs and cats, a rat/ferret can easily slip between cage bars. I don't know much about chinchillas, but I'd look into if they are predatory. How about guinea pigs or rabbits? I've actually heard great things about rabbits as pets, that they are intelligent and know of several people who litter box trained theirs. They are also not predatory and theres always lots up for adoption after easter every year, which would give time to prepare

One more thing (and perhaps it's my paranoia/how I was raised) I would not personally consider predatory/carnivorous animals as pets because of Kiwi. I know lots of people have them, but I don't think I'd ever feel safe with one in the home, especially since Kiwi is free most of the day. My parents never had dogs or cats or ferrets ext... because of their birds and the fact they wanted the birds to be able to be fairly free-roaming without risk of "incidents" with other pets. Again, I know other people may feel different, but just voicing my own personal opinion on the matter. I just don't feel prey animals and predatory animals mix.
