We have lots of chickens, and most of the roosters are separate from the hens. The rooster coop door is open, so they can go wherever. Anyway, there's this rooster that appears to be an outcast and isn't allowed in the rooster coop anymore by the others! :(

He takes shelter under our vehicles or the other coop. We brought him in a couple times and gave him mealworms (we raise those ourselves). He now expects to brought in and when he sees us he follows us around! He also loves to be picked up which is cute.

This evening, we brought him in again and he laid down thinking he was going to sleep in the house, lol. We would have let him if it weren't for, you know, him pooping everywhere. ;)

I didn't get pictures, I'll post some tomorrow for you guys.

kinda curious, of course don't put him with the budgies for safety and health reasons, but do they get to see one another? and do they react or to dissimilar of interests I suppose?

The reason I ask primarily is the local TSC always has chickens and ducks for sale at different times of the year (maybe it's one time of the year I never keep track) but when I see the chicks and ducklings I'm like I wonder if they would be an ok indoor, but mostly outdoor pet....

Yes I have done absolutely NO research into this so...feel free to lay it on me....was just a thought I have when I see them each whenever.

I think we've shown the budgies chickens before, I don't think they reacted too much. But we haven't shown them this particular one.

Some people have chickens in their house. We bring them in lots but never let them stay inside. The people that do have chickens inside have a diaper for them, kind of like the FlightSuit everyone on here talks about. I would just recommend you get the vaccination for Marek's if you do (we didn't one batch we got and had most of them die).

We joke about having a house chicken, mostly because Mom loves chickens so much (she wants all of the breeds! Lol). But they are so messy, they put parrots to shame. If you wouldn't mind having a chicken scratch all the food out onto the floor to find the pellet at the bottom, they'd be an ok indoor pet. But people with parrots are used to that sort of thing, lol. ;)

Here are some pictures. He was eating scrap food that spilled out of the feed shed, so he didn't want to be snuggly. :)

For anyone wondering, his comb is black because when they beat each other up, they grab the comb. This one got beat up a lot. There's also frostbite stuff going on, but lots of them have that.

ok another quick one, I don't have a fenced in back yard...are they territorial, like if I hang out with a chick or duckling they will figure out property lines or.....not like and old dog that lays in the yard all long.

If you have somewhere that it stays (house or coop) eventually it learns where its home is. We don't really have a fence either, but they venture out and come back every night to their home. It might be an issue if you live in town, but they always come back to where they live.

You can have a little fenced area for them to be outside (a "run"), but usually they find a way to fly out of it anyway, lol. :) We have a hen that always escapes somehow.

And ours haven't gone off the property. They seem to not go very far from the coop, so I think it's fine.

I've brought up to my wife that I would like to get a house chicken, but she won't even hear me out. :( As soon as I say house chicken, she says no. She's no fun.

Ya, that's no fun. Just buy your wife some farm eggs and she'll let you have a chicken. ;) You'll never go back to store bought eggs again...

Edit: Or maybe if you have one outside she'll eventually allow it inside. Or does she just not want a chicken at all?

So, this happened...

We brought him in to give him mealworms and he tipped the container over. He was scratching the floor (and container) to get all of the worms out lol.

It seems like there’s always one chicken that gets picked on. In our case usually the Polish. I have multiple coops so I tend to rearrange who spends time together. That ends when spring comes and everyone goes everywhere as everyone is free range here.

Our only house chicken is when someone is injured they go into a dog crate for short term rehab. We did have one Serama spend the winter in a guinea pig cage in the basement. They need heat here and when she lost the rest of her flock I decided I wasn’t heating a coop for a 340 gram bird. However she doesn’t scratch like most chicken so there was no dust involved.

Oh yes! A few of our Polish hens got picked on so much that their crest (is that what you call it? Anyway, the floof on their head) is mostly gone. There are two that were spared, I think because one of them has a scissor beak and the other one is so small (the others probably feel bad for them, idk).

The Polish ones in the rooster coop (we separate most of them from the hens) get picked on too, but not as much as the orpingtons. This poor one gets chased out of the coop, so he shelters elsewhere when he's not in the house (which he always insists on doing, lol).

One breed we don't have though is Seramas. I want some, but Mom doesn't like them (can't imagine why).

I think the size difference it would be like getting a predator to my little gcc now that I think about it, and probably the same for a duck, i dunno.

I went by the TSC today and the bins of chicks is actually out now but I know how big they will get so.... I like the idea, but I'm going to defer. Also I live in a town.

I don't think a chicken would bother a parrot, but I'm not sure. You're probably right that it would be better to act on the safe side.

Although, if you do get one, I wouldn't get it from the TSC. Just like parrots from a pet store, chickens and ducks from hatcheries are weaker and more susceptible to disease. We know because that's where we got ours and we have so many die all the time with various sicknesses. Probably better to get it from a private breeder. But then again, there's most likely minimum orders of 25 or more, so that wouldn't be ideal.

My parents and my two siblings (and maybe me, but I'll probably move earlier) are going to be moving to a town in the States, but Mom can't resist having chickens. So I wouldn't be surprised if they have 40 in their small back yard within a month, lol. :)

We brought him in again today for about 2 hours now. He got fed taco scraps (lettuce, salsa, meat, cheese). He went crazy for the meat and the salsa, but didn't really like the cheese and lettuce. I'd say he's pretty spoiled, lol.

Also, he has his favorite nesting spot picked out in the house already. He likes to wedge himself in between a bed and cabinet. He then proceeds to make contented noises. ❤️

This is a cool thread! Never knew much about the lives and habits of chickens! In my part of the world, many folks desire having a few chickens for the eggs. Some areas are zoned for a limited number of chickens, but *not* roosters! There are some agricultural areas nearby, so they can have unlimited numbers.

I suppose it is like companion parrots - until you have them you never know their charms!

Cities seem to be allowing chickens more and more it seems like for that reason (eggs, so people can be self-sufficient), but same thing here: no roosters! We live in rural enough place that there's almost no restrictions, but close enough to town that we can actually get groceries, so that's nice.

I've never had a companion parrot other than budgies, but they've only ever been tame enough to step up for a bit and then fly away. But ya, I'd imagine it'd be kind of like that. :) Do parrots tend to get spoiled like this guy, where we give him human food (taco stuff, popcorn, etc) because he's so cute? If so, ya, kind of like having a parrot in it's own way, lol.

Parrots that bond to their human servants can be extremely spoiled! Toss in a species that craves attention like a cockatoo and your life is forever changed!
