ARGH! My dad has a Visler dog, he constantly says I shouldn't have a pet as I need to be responsible if I go away making sure that it has someone to feed it, or a boarding place to take them.

Meanwhile last week my dad went to france for a week, didn't even think about his dog until the day before he left. Got my sister to look after him for a week leaving her unable to do anything as the dog is a nervous wreck without my dad around. My Sister lived with my dad until a month ago when she moved into her own place so she used to be the dog sitter when she was there. He didn't leave her any money as thanks, the fridge and cupboards were barren and he didn't even say when he was getting back! After a very heated argument my sister is no longer going to dog sit for him (she's right not to)

now he's asking me to look after the dog when he goes away again in a few weeks, I informed him I'm going away for a few days and that the dog doesn't like me to the point I'm kind of scared of him to which he said I should cancel my plans and "suck it up". *&^*% how dare he tell me I'm not responsible when he expects everyone to drop everything for him?

He informed me today that I no longer have to look after him as he booked a kennel, to which I replied that I wasn't looking after him in the first place. Very much not in the mood to deal with him for a while. Let's not forget that he used to have a dog sitter before my sister moved into his house and he just refuses to call them.

I swear this exact thing riles me up the most, being so hypocritical, saying I need to be responsible and plan things but he just expects everyone to drop everything for him.

Sorry to hear that. I know these kind's of issues can be hard to talk about with family, but I really hope that you can sort it out. Were here for you though.

I find looking after my bird is 100 times more responsibility than my dog. Dogs are generally easy, birds are so complicated, so to say you're irresponsible is kind of 'silly' (nicely put).

I'd have to agree with you that your dad seems a tad bit irresponsible himself, if he cannot organise the care for the pet/s he owns, he is an 'irresponsible pet owner' and therefore, an irresponsible person.

Donā€™t stress about it. Itā€™s enough to simply say sorry, I wonā€™t be able to do that, here is a number for a sitter service/kennel etc. if you give a reason, the other person will start arguing against it. Just keep repeating sorry, not able.... itā€™s respectful, maintains boundaries, and protects you from stress.

yep. I sat down with him after everything calmed and put it to him plainly that he needs to sort out care for his dog because it's not our job to pick up after him. To expect someone to drop everything just for him is ridiculous. He did concede he was being an idiot and he just going to use kennels whenever he's away.

He just got too used to my sister acting as his personal housemaid when she was living there. She was rightly annoyed as she doesn't want pets so she has freedom to do as she pleases

How frustrating!! Glad you stuck to your guns on this. Glad he is using a kennel service for his dog and finally being responsible, but can we say hypocrite much!!

I aint giving up my holiday for a dog I'm not too confident around! haha

He just doesn't think sometimes, though he has started listening to me a bit more recently and seems to be finally taking the advice to slow down a little and relax about things. He focuses on the little things and misses the big stuff.

Case of a 50+ year old construction worker/business owner who's always had to be constantly working at full steam not knowing how to stop for a moment
