I have a pet sheep, Amy. Lately she has been acting really weird, acting docile ( she's very aggressive ), wandering off into the next paddock, she's always eating and her stomach has really swollen. Her little stump of a tail wags when you touch her or even if you don't. All the things I've read says this points to pregnancy. But.... here comes the strange bit.
We don't have any rams.
All we have are castrated whethers and Amy.
We hand reared Amy since she was a few days old and she is now 6 or 7 years old. If she had a lamb now we'd have to hand rear it too.
I am so confused now.... I'm fairly sure she is carrying a lamb. Any suggestions?

My mom went to visit one of her friends who's sister has a farm. She had a baby female goat. My mom said this goat was so sweet and very "dog like". Would come when called, liked to be pet etc. Obviously VERY smart which I am positive sheep are too :) I so wish I had a farm!

Oh yes, Amy can open the gates, knows where her feed is kept, recognises the shearer, comes when she's called and even rears on command. They have a memory span of up to 2 years, and can remember up to 50 faces ( sheep and human ). Amy was rescued from next door's paddock.... her mother was dead and so were a lot of other ewes. Her brother was also rescued but died later :( .
Once she followed the car half-way to school and she knows when we are going on long holidays and runs after the car.

AW I am so happy that you guys rescued her and she now has a great home! You should post pics of her sometime :D

Poor little thing misses you when you leave! I did not know that about the facial recognition or the memory span, super interesting. I am sure all her memories with you are good ones :)

Hi
I am Bogo1's daughter. Does the timing work from the date of the shearing to the signs of pregnancy now? You could listen for the baby Lamb's heartbeat with a stethoscope. You want Amy to do well at delivery, yes? Have you ever read the James herriot book All creatures great and small? YOU would love it I think and it might help prepare you to help Amy.

I must confess I have an obsession with sheep lol. I always wanted one for a pet. That is so cute that she follows the car! You definitely need to put up some pics of Amy. Good luck with the delivery. Do you know how long a sheep's pregnancy lasts?
