Ok, must be one of those months because now I to have a new little baby in need. My brother and his friend were out for a walk and came across a little baby duck all alone in the road. If that isnt bad enough, the poor little guy seems to have a cut of some sort on its neck. Everyone is thinking bite, but we are not sure. If it is a bite, the little puff ball is very lucky, because it doesnt seem to have hit any blood veins. But the bite is bad enough that I will be searching around for a vet to take a look at it. My father says that in this area, I prolly wont be able to find someone willing to do anything but put it down. I still plan on calling around anyways. Another thing he told me, is that ducks can't be put on any meds. I will be looking into that to (not that I dont beleive him)
The little baby has to be only a couple days old, because it still has the mark of its horn (they are born with to help them get out of their shells). Right now its in a huge tupperware box at the end of the bed. It has some grass and water. Our biggest fear is it stressing out. Because it is wild, there is a chance that it will beat its self to death trying to get out. It is a sleep right now and if the poor thing starts acting like a normal baby its age, I will post up some pictures. And maybe we can all figure out what breed of duck the little on is. I am pretty sure it might be a wood duck. If it is a wood duck that might be another reason for its "cut". Wood ducks are born in the trees, so it could of fell out, and that would also give reason why my brother couldnt find its mother. Ducks are very loyal mothers.
I will be stopping by a farm feed store tomorrow to get some food.

Aren't you just the wild baby mother? I hope that the duck pulls through...I'm on the wild baby team at Tufts, too bad you don't live here, Tufts always takes in babies and gives them a chance...what do baby ducks eat in the wild?? And as far as stress, have you covered the box with a sheet or something to keep it dark? I always heard that covering up wildlife to keep light and sights of people out keeps their stress lower...maybe you know all this, seeing as how all the wildlife find you! Anyway, good luck, I'll be thinking about the little guy

I have set up the box its in just like I used to set them up when I raised baby ducks... I even used to have some wood ducks, which upon some web surfing I have desided I am 99% sure its a wood duck... the 1% is because its head doen't have the right marking, but that can change because of its age... It might be too younge to even have the facial markings... might even be a mixed breed... although rare in the wild.

Will keep you guys posted

Not looking good guys... the poor little guy wont stop trying to jumo out of the box. This is what I was worried about, if he doesnt stop he will wear him self to death. :(
What maked it sad is that he has the spirt to live... but his spirt is what is going to kill him.....
well I will update you in the morning to let you know if he makes and how he is doing. Its a shame because they really are a beautiful breed of duck.

Ok... through MANY calls I am being told that what I am doing now is the way to go.... because it is a wild born duck and because the wound isnt bleeding and it isn't deep, she is going to worry about it to eatting first... So, I will be stopping by a feed store to get what is called starter feed and we will see from there.

well tonight he is doing a lot better... at letting me sleep :D
He is drinking a lot, but doesn't seem to be eatting anything yet. But it is being playful, is drinking reguarly and bathing/preening. The place I stopped at didnt have the starter food, so I am leaving work early today to check another place.
Cricket on the other hand wants to know where the crazy peeping noise is coming from... so, of course, she peeps right back at it
