I have a horse being dropped off at my farm this week. She is 10 years old, was a perfect trail horse..... then they sent her off to be bred... after she foaled they tried to ride her and she won't turn right. They sent her to an abusive cowboy (horse expert my ...) and she came back even more screwy. So they were planning to dump her at auction (which pretty much would guarantee she'd go to mexico for slaughter). So I volunteered to fix her.

I have some time set aside for horses every day, and I trained all 4 of our (including a 2 year old never handled WILD mustang)horses. I just couldn't stand that they'd let such a nice horse go to slaughter simply because they are too abusive to convince her to turn right.... At a couple of points they tied her head to the right and tried to force it.... All they successfully did was bloody the crap out of her mouth. UGH!

So, she arrives this week. Wish me luck, and thanks for listening to my rant! Lol :D

Just a Quaker Parrot and a Ringneck Dove.
Thank God for you... seriously. I wish more people would do what they could to let animals live, despite how convenient or inconvenient it was.

O.M.G..l was sick reading your post l also have years of experiance working with horses, my first thought was that it was not that she didn,t want to turn more likely she has a injury that stops her from turning ! I guess u are thinking the same have her back checked , neck ect by chiropractor . l have found (Bowen )
Equine muscle release therapy ! helps well if an experienced person apply,s all the best l wish you and her well ...

Yep I used to own horses and this breaks my heart . What a bunch of idiots . If you abused me everyday I would not come to you either . End of story . God please tell me you are not going to return her to them . Can you afford to purchase her and then find a good home if you can ? I worry about her going back to those f-ing idiots !!!

Thanks for editing my language mike... lol (oops). Wasn't thiinking (I really do know better)

I have considered an injury and will be looking into it further with my vet. I want to narrow it down a bit. I need to gain her trust (worjing on that first) then we'll call the vet again. I watched her movements very closely when I turned her out to see how she moves. I need to do some further research into who I can call in my area to have this assessed.

I am working on the "what to do with her next" problem.... They are asking an ungodly amount for he, and I don't need (or want) 5 horses. I am gonna play it by ear and see what I can swing.

She followed me around the corral this morning. I can catch and pet her. She is so unsure of people now that it makes me sad :(

I don't know why but every time I read this post, I think of 'teeth'. The obvious things you have probably checked. I used a bosal hackamore to make my baby more flexible.

We also had a problem w/a QH gelding, we sold him & the new owners couldnt do anything w/him. I was like 'is it the same horse'? This guy was pushbutton, how could they be having problems. He was just smart enough to know that they didn't have the confidence to make him work.

Good luck w/her, paints are in such demand, she would be ok having babies if they are unable to handle her.

I haven't had the vet check her teeth yet. He will be out tomorrow. I considered teeth, and theey will be checked (along with anything else either of our vets can think of). The prior (or current) owners tried a bosal and she lifted her face up all the way and bolted. Now that could be a reaction from being forced with a bit so long, there could be some sort of absess, she could be having neck pain, or back pain, etc... We'll start with the obvious stuff tomorrow with the vet. If he doesn't find anything then I'll proceed with some basic stuff and use a sidepull and a training fork to try and gently ground drive (will push from the opposite side, the training for will make sure she can't throw her head so high to escape the sidepull.) I want to ground drive her if they don't see anything, because it is a very low key way to see if she has the same problem without someone on her back. (I honestly hope the vet can find the root cause though. )

I'm terrible about updates, sorry :)

So, they picked her up today.... She rode just fine here...

Middle story turns out nothing physically wrong with her. She was stubborn and needed firm (but FAIR and GENTLE) handling. She rides awesome! I had my novice son on her, my novice friends ride her, she was great!

So I reluctantly gave her back to her legal owners :(

I just got a phone call from my husband.... he works with the owner. (3rd shift). He asked my husband how much I like the horse. My husband said that I love the horse and enjoyed riding her. The owner said he'll give her to me. They got her home and tried riding again and she (the horse) went nuts. Won't take a step, they had all kinds of problems getting on her. She took an hour to saddle, etc...

So, despite my dismay at 5 horses.... My husband agreed and said we'd take her.

So Skittles will be home and safe again tomorrow :D
