My parents went to Arizona for the weekend and came back this afternoon with a surprise for me. They said go look in the back of the truck and to my amazement they had tore up a manzanita tree for me! This thing is about 8' tall and 4' wide. I wanted to order a bunch of new perches soon but now I don't have to. I have to do quite a bit of work to make them into safe perches like disinfecting them, cutting them to size, putting bolts in them, and sanding them to make them not slippery but hey its a labor of love.
Now if only I can get them to tear up a cholla cactus for me...

You do have great parents. They are very sweet to do that for you.

Aww, that was definitely pretty sweet of them to do. My Mom used to do things like that for me, only it was usually horse stuff ;)

You'll have to share some pics!

MikeyTN...yes they enjoy them but not nearly as much as I do, what they don't like is their noise.
I will post some pics probably soon because the camera is out of commission right now but it should be replaced on Tuesday.

Your folks sound great, like you Katherine, mine would do the same thing for me but with horsey stuff. But did I miss something? Why would you want a cholla cactus? Maybe you were joking?? Being from the desert, myself, I've seen cholla cactus skeletons that make beautiful pieces to use in art form. A bird would destroy this form of cholla..

Cholla make great perches when dried out, they are hard and rough. I consider them the best perches you can buy because they can be used for even handicapped birds because of all the holes in them it is easy for crippled birds to grip. They also aren't slippery like manzanita and Java wood.

You know what!? I've never tested the strength of this wood, I always assume that my U2 can chew through anything, which he practically can. Sassy is opening my realm of possibilities, cholla would be a beautiful perch for the right bird!

The only downside, and this could be a problem with chewers, is that its hollow so the bird can chip chunks off of it instead of chewing little pieces like on normal perches. But on the plus side you can hide little treats in the holes!

Hey cdog ,we use the cholla branches and the zons love them, only problem is they collect food and poop and are hard to clean. They make great shower /playstand perches because the birds can hang from them and all that crazy stuff. But i wouldn,t use them for everyday cage perches.

I use them in my cages with no problem. I just make sure they arent in a place that the birds eat or poop on.
