I am slowly but surely starting to go back to the bird store/shelter to help out. Well these 2 girls (probably in their upper 20s) came in with a cockatiel :white1: in the WORST, I mean WORST condition ever possible. It was like I was watching Animal Cops with their "worst case scenario"!
So basically these girls come in with a pretty empty cage (oh, except for the 1 stand and a white cockatiel). But guess what, it takes both the manager and store owner to get the bird out of the cage because its OVERGROWN beak is stuck around the bars. It's beak had grown completely around and back to it's throat. It was already cutting the skin around its throat and they put Neosporin cream on it asap (after they clipped the Godforsaken beak). If you were to straighten the part of the beak they clipped off, it would have been almost on an inch:eek: --but this is just the start of its deplorable condition my friends. The manager was doing all of the trimmings and checking it out. She has worked with birds for 20 years and never seen a cockatiel that neglected before. Just from holding it she told the girls that whatever it's eating is horrible and making it sick. It had a fat stomach but was lethargic and the feathers were in a bad condition too of course from the diet. Next the feet were checked out...it had already lost one toe and was right about to lose another one. There were horrible sores all over its feet (from standing on the same surface 24/7 they guessed). But in addition to the sores, the feet and legs were swollen from infection. The manager told the girls that the bird needs to see a vet asap...but we're doubtful it will happen. I'm happy our manager was straight up with girls saying this bird will die soon, it's on its last leg unless you majorly step up to help it. We told them that they can bring the bird back any time if they have questions (or possibly if they don't want to take care of it anymore we'll take it gladly) During this whole time, the girls just stood there. One didn't say anything, the other answered questions but we don't think they were telling the truth. They said they just bought it off craigslist very recently and it came like that. ...sure it did.

That was the bad experience I witnessed (but learned from!) Something cool happened too, I got to interact with an IRN :D After repeatedly watching those hilarious youtube videos of the IRNs I really want one. So I got to interact with one in person seeing if it may possibly be a parrot that would work for me. This one didn't talk at all like the videos, but it loved giving kisses! Someone bought it right as I was there, which is honestly a good thing. I am in no way ready for another parrot. Maybe in a couple years I will be (fingers crossed!)....P.S. the store got 2 baby yellow IRNs today, so not fair :p

That poor bird! D: Whenever I'm at work and people want just the bare minimum for a new bird, I tell them, "Don't expect it to last long then." People just don't care. They want something entertaining in the corner, or just to listen to. It's insanity.

I could rant all day about the ignorance of the masses, but I do hope that poor baby finds some relief.

Also, IRN are so cute. Marnie is the cutest little Youtube birdie. :)

D: that's terrible. Shelters should be able to apply for some kind of authority from the government to be able to intervene when things like that happen. I cant believe you had to let them take it home again. (and from the sounds of their care) i'm surprised they wanted to. :(

it's cruel to keep a bird while someone doesn't know what the hell of keeping pet is.
