Can Our Parrots Sense Hurricane Sandy?

So living in PA were bit worried with Sandy coming. We stocked up on everything but candles Andre live on city water so although no electricity we will have cold water (which means no showers for Erin and I). Besides the cars we aren't worried about flooding as we live on a second floor. Erin is moved away from all windows and were feeling pretty prepared. However last night schemas a bit more vocal, so I sent her to bed early and we had a quiet night. Today she is still being vocal(and she only is vocal when her food or water is empty, which it's not) she's also been fluffed all day and started to restart her very excessive preening. Can she sense the hurricane? Is any one else's' birds acting weird?

I FIRMLY believe they sense changes in the weather, this includes high/low pressure fronts as well as storms (severe) and cold fronts. My breeder and I believe this is tied into Barometric pressure changes. I have seen too many mood swings that can only be attributed to this and my breeder feels the same way.

I also believe they sense "something's up". All of mine have NOT been the same for the past 24-36 hours. And we are right smack in the middle of Sandy's path.

I noticed that the outdoor birds are a bit odd the last couple days. My two conures are acting odd and have been since yesterday evening. I think I'm going to have to start watching my brother's barometric meter that he has. He's obsessed with weather so he keeps track of that stuff. I'll ask him to move it from his room to the main area of the house to see if i can notice a change in that and the birds.

I'm going to be right near the eye in the storm since I live on long island . Everybody is going to the stores and is stocking up on water. My budgies has been acting really weird lately too. I believe that , no wait I KNOW that animals can sense drastic changes in the weather . I bet you that when I go to the pet store tommorow everybody will be stocking up on pet food.

Everyone in the storms path, are preparing for it, and the birds might just feel the stress from the people, rather than sensing a hurricane is coming....

I don't doubt they can feel it before we can...

Absolutely, lene! I HAVE been on edge, and my birds obviously pick up on that one

My thoughts are, and will continue to be with each of you on the east coast who are within or near the projected path of Sandy. Hopefully the storm will dwindle down to a point where it poses little or no threat before its predominant forces hit the coastline. Please take proper precautions for yourselves and your families (non-human members included).

i read it has something to do with the barometric pressure??

My breeder and I believe this is tied into Barometric pressure changes.

Yea, y'all be DAMN careful on this one, reminds me alot of Ike, wasn't that "severe" of a hurricane but the storm surge due to it's sheer size was VERY bad!!! Only hurricane I've ever run from and we lost everything we didn't take with us. Do NOT underestimate what that storm surge can do!!! Please be careful and be smart!!

I downloaded this radar app that could sense hurricanes and we saw it on my I pad . The middle of the storm is hitting new jersey, also a good chunk of it is hitting new York and Pennsylvania . Getting a bit worried about it. Whenever I get nervouse about sandy . If you want you could download a radar app and you could see where the hurricane is going. Hope we all stay safe.

I have read a lot about parrots sensing earthquakes a little before a human can feel it. I haven't read much about hurricanes/storms.

Pritti has been through a number of hurricanes with us, some very bad ones, and some mild ones. In my opinion, I did not observe any changes in his behavior. To me, it seemed like each was just another day to him. Even after a couple of them when we were without power for as many as 8 days, he seemed as usual. But then again, what changed for him -- not much -- his cage/feeding/toys/attention were all just about the same.

If it is true that birds can sense changes in barometric pressure and are tuned in to knowing that a particular change means a really big storm is coming -- I think our our fids are likely reacting just as much or more to how the humans in the house are feeling/sounding/looking from the anxiety or preparations. In fact, they fids may be receiving less attention, or notice changes in the amount and pitch of talking, movement of things inside the house, etc.

Everyone, be safe, and BE PREPARED for during and after the storm. 3 to 5 days of post-storm food/water/meds etc. etc. etc.
