I have one umbrella cockatoo. A female 3 years old named Mina.
As I was arguing with my teenage daughter, she is 16 if that gives you the general idea of the dare I say hell I am going though daily. Part of my brain kept thinking I just need to get outta here and get into my bird room. Now don't get me wrong I adore my daughter. It just sometimes all the drama I have to deal with I feel like I'd rather get bit by my bird lol. Now Mina has her own set of problems and drama. So I'm asking all you parronts out there, is it easier to deal with you kids mood swings and drama?or your fids mood swings and drama?

When my teens are acting up so do the fids! At these times I want to box the whole lot of them up and ship every one to a zoo.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
Oh, the FIDS mood swings are far more predictable, and way easier to deal with... Mine daughter turns 17 in December, by the way... so I feel your pain!

There's that empathic thing working against you this time!

Oh its bad, when there is any fighting in the house the bird join in and pick sides! Spirit my older grey who rarely talks yelled at every one one day to " SHUT UP AND LISTEN TO MOM!!" Stopped the fight mid yell and got every one laughing.

But , that being said the house with just fids and me is MUCH calmer then house plus teens...

That being said, why are you arguing with someone who knows everything?!

Just soak up some of those pearls of wisdom, and that treasure trove of experience...

And if that doesn't work, the statement I like to use is:

"Don't make me embarrass you in front of your friends! Cuz I'll do it y'know!"

Oh yeah, that one puts the fear of God back into her...

Depends on the kids age :p I find kids easier, because they eventually grow up, and each stage in their young life there are different issues so you don't have the same one EVERY SINGLE DAY! The fids are just permanent children.. forever! Haha. But then there have been a few times when I'd much rather just deal with my birds grouchiness than with my kids. ^^

Urgh! I must be a weirdo or something! I *love* teenagers! I was always petrified of my daughter hitting her teen years because of all the bad rap they (teenagers) get. But, honestly, it was a breeze. We had our differences of opinion, for sure, but we've always had a rule in our house that when someone's talking, everyone must listen. Really listen. As a result, our whole family is very close and we don't have a detectable 'generation gap'.

Meeting my daughter's friends has been a pleasure: they're all funny and clever and silly and earnest and young and inexperienced. Best of all, though, they're honest. If you listen to what they have to say and treat them seriously, they will surprise you with their thoughtfulness.

Oh Lord, I sound like a TV evangelist, but I really don't mean to. Just wanted to say I've had fun dealing with teenagers and I never thought I would. :D

Betrisher it sounds great in your houseπŸ˜ƒ my daughter and I normally have a wonderful relationship. However it's that special week of the month and nothing anyone says is right lol. I just cross my fingers my bird and daughter don't both have a bad day at the same time hahaha.

Pfft! Minamommy, you didn't mention 'that' particular week in your first post! Such weeks ought to be banned - they're absolutely no good to wo/man or beast! All I can suggest is to lock her (your daughter) in with her own hormones for the week and let her out when she's herself again.

When my sister was young, my poor Mum would say to her: 'Francie, when you grow up I hope you have about twelve kids and I especially hope they're ALL LIKE YOU!'

Well, she only had three kids and they *are* all like her and - dare I say with a wicked little smile on my face - it's been quite difficult for her. To put it mildly. I'm sure Mum didn't really mean it. Really... Really...?

PS. Francie isn't awful any more: she's my best friend. :D

We fixed the hormones in this house! As much as it costs it is worth it. I switched every one to organic milk. By the second month there was a HUGE difference!

Oh my gosh this gave me a good chuckle for at least 10 minuets.
