I just love those documentaries, and I always keep abreast of what ones Nature is running. When I watch one I love on my dvr I can't bring myself to delete them - currently I have Parrot Confidential, Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air, Elsa's Legacy: The Born Free Story, Parrots in the Land of Oz and Birds of the Gods (about birds of paradise). I also had one of Echo the elephant but somehow that was deleted. These things touch my heart. I do have to say though that I DO NOT LIKE seeing animals killed in documentaries, and even by other animals although I know that is natural - it distresses me and stays with me so I either don't watch them if I know it will be in that show, or I will fast forward it, but I definitely will not keep it. I just can't help it.

Thanks Nathan for that post. I also have a special interest in the Passenger Pigeon as well as the Carolina Parakeet. To me human caused extinctions are rather like a mortal sin, so I believe we should do whatever we can to ensure it doesn't happen especially if is our fault.

When I was at University, I became good friends with a guy from Papua New Guinea. He told me stories of the ways in which he, his father and his five brothers would hunt the BOPs and take their feathers for making costumes. The people would have huge gatherings called 'singsings' and everyone would come adorned in complicated outfits made from the fur of possums and tree kangaroos as well as the feathers of hundreds and hundreds of BOPs. After much discussion, he conceded that killing the BOPs might result in losing them for good. I like to think he went home and persuaded his family not to hunt them any more. :)
