....just curious...Target came up to Canada just last year.

It is bombing terribly. they are competing agains Wal-Mart who has been up here for ages.

more and more the U.S. stores are coming into Canada, which I love, but I HATE seeing our Canadian stores go belly up.
Marshalls has just nicely come in, I have no idea how they are doing.

Big Lots is coming next year from what I have heard.

Lowes & Home Depot have been here for years, both are doing great.

any preference to Target or Wal-Mart?

Target is not doing great, on the other hand they are not totally bombing either. They are trying to adjust and find their niche.

I know I have heard some second hand grumbling about things that may or may not have been said by corporate.

I think if they get the PR straight they will be a long running bit of competition for China-Mart. It's all about winning hearts and minds I guess...

I didn't know that they are French owned.

I've only been into Target once, when they first opened as I was curious.

nothing to write home about, I was rather disappointed, it's just another Wal-Mart type store.

Well, after doing some looking I guess I was misinformed, They appear to be US owned.

I swear I heard issues about a french holding company holding controlling interest.

Guess I should look before speaking...

As for my shopping choice, HATE shopping in Walmart. LOVE shopping in Target. There are some significant differences. In facct, if there is something I want from Walmart, I will order it online.

Correct Crimson, Target is American owned. There has been a very nasty TOTALLY FALSE email going around about Target for years. One person gets it and forwards it to the next without fact-checking, and so on. I implore folks to please please please fact check before sending these emails misinforming the public and causing hardhsip for others. Target is U.S. owned, it does support many very good causes with charitable donations - like schools, Veterans.

Here in Detroit-metro Target isn't doing so good from what I can see. They appear to be short staffed. Out of 10 registers only a few are open, creating long lines. I walked in, saw the lines and walked right back out. At Walmart every register is ching-chinging. I used to like Target and still do, but it seems like there are never any employees around, like K-mart...which is a ghost town now.

The target I work at is doing great, but it's also located at a popular mall. Other local targets also do well, some are making a much higher gross compared to the store I work at.Because it's Christmas it's super busy. In electronics where I work I'm constantly on the go, one guest after.

I love target, way more than wallmart. I should add that all the wallmarts in my area are super ghetto...

I was just wondering why Target is not doing well, in my section of the woods.
I thought maybe it was due to us Canadians not accepting Target when we are use to Wal-Mart.
I had heard that Target is a direct competitor to Wal-Mart, and was curious to know how it was working out for them in the U.S.

A brief history
Target is headquartered in Minneapolis, MN. The company started in 1902 by the Dayton family. It grew to be a Macy's type of dept store and they expanded around the region. Just over 50 years ago they opened the first Target discount dept store here in Minnesota. By 2000, Target had become their primary business and they changed the company name from Dayton Hudson Corp. to Target. Now all of the Dayton's branded stores have closed.
In the US, Target is second only to Walmart and is ranked very high in the Fortune 500

To me, Target is a local company that I should support, but I shop across the street at the evil Walmart because their prices are just that much better.

My biggest guess is that they are just too new and unknown, so people stick with what they do know. It could also be resentment by people who liked Zellers.

There's a new huge Target where I live and anyone who's anyone in my town shops there. It's like all the cool kids go to Target. But I personally like Wal-Mart more.

I love Targets and I work at walmart , I think my store is pretty nice we just went through a remodel about 3 months ago and the store looks great , believe me as a walmart employee you go through all kinds of stuff especially with upper management and sometimes rude costumers , but as they say it's a job and it pays the bills so off to work I go :(

Some of the best deals I have gotten lately, when it comes to pet supplies (not parrot), has been the Tractor Supply Company. They've had some premium dog and cat foods, plus the best prices on wild bird products I've seen with a huge selection. I haven't shopped at a Target in years, but they do remind me of K-Mart for some reason, but I do shop occassionally at our super walmart sells a lot of food products. I've also been stopping into Big Lots - I used to hate them, was such a crappy store, but for the last couple of years they have been really nice with some outstanding value in products.

Targets are really popular here. My dad runs the job sites building new super Target stores in the area, so he really hates Target with a passion...but I would be stressed out and probably hate them too if I had the challenge of building them.

Ughhh Walmart...Wallyworld.......they are so dirty and ghetto. They are always a mess since they constantly have customers 24/7. I avoid Walmart at all costs.

I love Target....walk in to buy a 6$ lipstick and I leave with 100$ of other things not on the list lol!
