Terry what kind of finches do you have?

When I had finches (before I was into parrots) I had tried tons of different exotic species, but only having cages and not an aviary, the only ones that did okay long term were Gouldians. Even they got respiratory problems after a while and I had to rehome them to a lady with an aviary. I think that was also before air purifier use was common with birds.

I have a double flight of Zebras, and another large flight with Gouldians, Owls, Cordons, waxbills and Societies. So far they are all doing well, and we are running air purifiers so maybe that is what is helping:)

Sweet, Terry! Is that cage as massive as it looks?

I hope so! I got the measurements and it seems to be huge...She said the 2 back panels are 36" each, and 48" in total for the 3 front panels. I will be able to tell better when we pick it up:)

Terry I read your post yesterday where you mentioned your finches and today you answered what my question was going to be about which ones could be in the same cage. With the mix in the large flight is there ever any blood shed or fighting between the different species? How large is the current flight cages that they are in? I love the small finches and every time I go to the bird shows the wax bills, cordon blues, gouldians and african green singing finches start calling my name. There are a lot of others as well.....Alison:)

When you're picking finches to house together you need to be aware of temperament and dietary needs. Some finches like Javas and zebras are more aggressive than say gold breasted. I would not house them together.

We have milder mannered species at our place and for funsies have an "African" finch flight cage and an "Australian" finch flight cage.

If you get your finches from a breeder and don't want to research them you can probably ask them which species can be housed together.

@ Joe - we are hoping to pick the cage up by Monday at the latest, then I just need to disinfect and then add my babies!

@ aliray - Karen is right about being careful who you house together. If you Google it, there are some cool charts that show what kinds are aggressive and who can live together peacefully. I referred to them quite a bit when I started adding different kinds of finches to my flight.
I have had no issues with the mix of finches in their flight. The flight they are in is 6 feet long, and 4 feet tall at it's highest side, 3 feet tall at it's lowest side.and they have plenty of room to get away from each other, so that helps, I think.

Before I had parrots, I was into finches. When I was just starting out, a newbie mistake I made was I put a cute little (TINY) gold breasted in with a couple more aggressive species in too small a cage, and I no sooner brought him home and put him in there, and they killed it. :( Oh I'll never forget that.

The only finches I have owned over a sixty plus year span is one Java Rice finch that my teacher gave me in 5th grade. Two canaries one of whom I have now And many years ago a pair of Zebra finches that raised three babies. I just love watching and listening to them I sorry you lost one but thank you for telling me because If I ever had the chance to have more I would do the research first. Woops I also forgot that I had a green singing finch back when I was first married. I have always had pets as soon as I could run quick enough to catch them:p:D....Alison
