WHAT?! Meyers parrots here cost $3000 each!? And Senegals are $1500! >=O So unfair... Yep, just a tiny little rant about prices here in Australia.. and Galahs. .*snorts* $200+ when there are hundreds of them everywhere!!!

I think it's interesting what is common or rare, and expensive vs inexpensive depending on what country were in. Senegals and Meyer's were exported to the States in large numbers. Obviously not to Australia!

I guess it also goes with demand? Senegals and especially Meyer's must be highly sought after there? I can't imagine $3000 and $1500!
My Ruppell's Parrot being very rare was not much more expensive than any other Poicephalus over here, probably cause of no demand for the small gray birds :)

And you can't even touch a major Mitchell's for less than 5k and I don't even want to discuss the black toos.

I don't let myself look at pictures of the red tailed 'toos anymore because I remember the price tag and it makes me cry. I'm in denial that they even exist because I'll never see one. Lol.;)

the problem in Australia is that there weren't that many of the more obtuse, or more expensive birds imported into the country, before the environmental protection and biodiversity conservation act was established, which I think, well it was at least updated in 1999 but i am pretty sure the import of exotic birds was halted in the early 1980's. so there just aren't that many of them being bred or for sale. although if you really want to have your mind blown for price comparison, recently i was in japan doing one of my favorite things, getting purposefully lost in the decent looking back streets of another country. anyway i walked into this one building that had a pet shop in it, and a baby budgie was for sale for 25000 yen, which is equal to more than 250 Australian dollars, and it was a bargain, they had reduced it by 2500y already. the cockatiels where 50000Y and if you wanted to buy the lovebird it would have set you back about 620000 yen.

Well, you know if you sealed a parrot in a box, the shipping company *might* have an hour to deliver the package before the winged occupant merrily chewed it's way out:) Heck, it may even arrive happy having been given such a wonderful toy to rip up on it's journey:54:

@WhirlyBird- if a budgie is $250 AUD (which is $234 USD BTW), imagine what a macaw costs:eek::eek::eek:

@Hcatta- Any clue why the Netherlands would have such cheap parrots?

Actually that's where it got more strange, because when I was actually, unintentionally lost, i did see an exotic pet store, with a random Galapagos turtle roaming around and sloths, monkeys and the odd giant hamster, oh and penguins, all for sale and there was actually a I think it was a Harlequin macaw for sale for Y450000 which is approx $4500au which is actually about what blue and gold macaws are advertised for in Australia, I haven't seen a harlequin advertised in Australia. Now I have no idea how tame it was, but it didn't seem scared humans, and my Japanese is pathetic at best so I couldn't really ask about it, or directions on how to get back.

Tell me about it! I paid 1k for me sennie in new Zealand. Amazons are around 5k. Macaws are 6-15k depending what type. We don't get a huge number of species I see on here. I have only heard of two sennie pairs in the country and 3 in total greenwings.

:O seriously!? The Kakariki status in the wild is now endangered.. You'd think they'd allow people to breed them/have as pets to increase numbers.. The breeding programs they do have, as far as I know, are minor and won't help much. *shakes fist*
