Thanks for the pictures!

Where is the rescue/store?

I live a bit south of you and am always looking for a new avian store to visit.

Presently have six Greenwing Macaw (17 yo), Red Fronted Macaw (12 yo), Red Lored Amazon (17 y.o.), Lilac Crowned Amazon (about 43 y.o.) and a Congo African Grey (11 y.o.)
Panama Amazon (1 Y.O.)
What species are the 2 black/brown birds in the firt photo? They are beautiful!

Those are Aracari's... they are in the Toucan family.

EXTREMELY DIET SENSITIVE BIRDS!! Prone to iron storage disease.

I've never seen them in a rescue/rehome situation before. Those things are VERY rarely kept in the pet trade. Since they are so expensive and hard to come by, they are usually only owned by folks who really, really, really want one.

They are aracaris? They have the body of aracari but that beak is too small for aracari.

For a while I was thinking of getting a pair of aracari but reality kicked in ... I got a conure instead:D. After watching one of my bike buddies owning and caring for one, I am so glad I didn't buy them. The maintenance expense is unbelievable. Well, he owns a car dealership, so he can aford those birds.

Looks more like an aracari to me, but it's possible they are toucanets.

There are so many varieties of those things, I can't keep them straight.

And yeah, the mess and expense, and the fact that you can easily kill them if you don't feed them properly... not something I'd want to take on.

Plus they can be pretty hyper from what I understand. I've never been around them. I know one toucan breeder. I played with a few Tocos... they were fun... but I wouldn't want to have to care for one.

Terry, isn't that like Dactyl your bearded barbet? It looks like your Dactyl and the one at the bird store by me.

Birdman, remember Cateyes221981 has the toucanets and aracaris? She was showing the serrated beaks remember that?

You're right. I got it wrong. That does look like a barbet and not an aracari... so add mealworms to the diet?

Still the toucan family...

Yeah, that one aracari had a beak like a hacksaw blade. That one stood out in my mind! Yikes...

So, fruit and live insects. Superworms wasn't it?

Here's the link to Terry's Dactyl, she's got the info on these little guys:

My Husband is going to be so UNHAPPY with you for sharing this!!! He's banned me from pet stores and repeats something like "no more birds", it's fuzzy and I tell him I don't speak Spanish (he's Mexican).

Seriously though, this is a great share and I hope they find great homes and parronts.

Awww, I hope they all find wonderful homes. You had to post that photo of the Umbie, didn't you? That's good, though, they need publicity. Thank you for posting this thread and the photos, Hawk.

Julie and Mark, I'm pretty sure you're right, I think it's a bearded barbet like Terry's dactyl. I couldn't adopt a bird like that, I'd over feed him after seeing the video of Terry's bird swallowing worms. I've never seen a bird show so much enthusiasm while eating.

How does one go about adopting these birds?

Mark is an Avian Vet that dedicated an Avian store/Rescue which he owns and operates with a staff that has been there a very long time and cares for the birds.

Since he is an Avian Vet, All birds are thoroughly checked before he releases them to be sold. Some he adopts himself, or takes home and observes and socializes them as do the staff. These birds are treated with upmost care.

Rescue birds are held for a while then worked with by Mark, and staff to assure any abuse or bad habits are broken. They take these birds home and socialize them and observe them.

Prices are reasonable, but may be a bit higher than one would pay for a bird that hasn't been checked out, or socialized. Prices are negotiable as well.

Mark accepts payments on birds as well instead of full price. His choice however.

The Birds that are not rescues are obtained by well known breeders and show birds from bird shows at cobal arena in Detroit or Birch Run Expo center up by me. The birds are always top notch quality form there, those that do not meet criteria are not bought by mark, so you know your getting a very good quality bird, with good disposition. Poppie, My Amazon came from there originally to owner before me. She is one Amazing Amazon, I've yet to come across one that has the disposition she has and the very large vocabulary as well.

The Store and rescue is "Wings and Things" in Bay City, Michigan
Their web site may not be up to date as Mark and their staff spend their time with birds and bird shows, and have little time to keep web page updated.
