College :(

It just suddenly dawned upon me today; I leave for college in two years, so what's going to happen with S'mores, Bartleby, and Shelby? And I do NOT trust leaving them with my parents for 4 to 6 years. I plan on going to the Florida Institute of Technology to study marine biology. Anybody here who went or going to college, while owning fids, can give me some advice, because I'm not really sure they allow pets on campus and I don't want to leave them behind with my parents. I can't really think of anything unless rent a pet friendly apartment near campus but that might cost extra money. I don't know, some advice please.

Sorry I dont have much advice to offer Ap. I really hope you can work something out so you can take them with you! Renting an apartment could be a great idea. You could also share rent with a couple other people who are animal friendly to cut down on cost

Sorry, not a whole lot of advice for you since my college is only 20 min away and I live at home. Maybe you could pay someone to keep them for you until you are done? This obviously needs to be someone you really trust. Or like you said, rent a pet friendly apartment, and splitting the rent with a room-mate or two would be a great idea to cut the costs!

Call me cruel but I would not bring them to college. I am leaving for college next month and I am leaving my birds with my parents. I have two reasons for doing this. 1) I have to live on campus until I have 90 units and the dorms don't allow pets. 2) It's college. College is meant to be tough and you have to study a lot. This will mean a lot less time with your birds.

I am leaving my birds with my parents and they are going to read some books about parrot care before I leave and I will write down everything I do. I am also going to make 4 months worth of toys and make mash and freeze so that it will last the 4 months.

That's my 2 cents.

Yeah but my problem is leaving them with my parents. They don't give a rat's a** about what happens with my birds. I almost lost them on several occasions because of my parents. If I can't bring them, then I don't know where to put them because I am NOT leaving them with my parents. Sorry if I sound mad.

well then I understand wanting to take them. My mom had birds when she was younger and she loves them which makes leaving them easier.

I'm so sorry Ap, that's quite a pickle you're in. My best suggestions would be to either rent an apartment room or to get a reputable birdsitter.

I live in Florida. I live in Gainesville HOME OF THE GATORS AT UF and most places you can have birds and reptiles and they dont charge pet fees for them mostly cats and dogs you have to pay fees for. Taking your animals with you is best plus they will make you happy when times get tough! GOOD LUCK! plus you have 2 years to worry about it..

It's true that college is meant to be tough and you need to study but someone who is happy and has some comfort around them will study a lot better. Plus if you have bird-friendly roomies the fids will get lots of attention. Sometimes just sitting on your shoulder while you study will be fulfilling. Just think of when your writing essays and going bonkers all of a sudden they do something that makes you laugh, brings you back down to earth and relaxes you. How much better will you do? A happy worker works harder

Ap, you have 2 years to worry about it. I can totally understand why you would be worrying about it now (I would be freaking out lol) but I really have faith that within time you will have something planned and figured out.

With a little planning ahead it's not too hard to find an apartment near most campuses that might even be CHEAPER than dorms. Then you also don't have to move out between semesters.

Most apartments tend to be okay with birds, particularly smaller ones like teils and keets. Just don't go getting a macaw in the next two years.

Antionette has a point. Lots can happen in 2 years. But, it's not bad to have a plan. Check with the college and see about pet policies.

However, Chaos also has a good point. You are going to be busier than you've ever been. And that's just with the studying. And as much as you say now that socializing will be a low priority, it'll be hard to say no all the time.

Thanks a lot guys! Yeah, good thing I realized this now and not a month before I leave! Good thing is one of my closest friends is attending the college I want to go to, so he's going to try to help me out and see what he can do!

Kinda feel a similar worry to you. There is a good chance my upcoming career will take me interstate and international very regularly. This is probably about 3-5 years away at this stage, but I'm trying to figure it out now. My parents have offered to take mine in, so I am trying to educate them so this can happen. I wouldn't want to re-home them unless I had to, they are so dear to me.

It would be great if you can take them both with you. I hope your friend can help you out.

Wow, FIT is like 15 minutes from my house

There are some cheap (small), nice apartments right behind the publix on 192. Me and my mom almost moved in there. They're pretty much walking distance to the Melbourne mall, also.
They're small, but i'm pretty sure you can have pets there. ( I dont know, do you have to tell apartments that you have birds? they're not like cats and dogs, they don't cause damage and if they live in a cage, i dont think it should cost any extra, but i'm really no expert on this matter. my apartments didn't make us pay a pet fee for my iguana or my bird)

There is one in vero beach, and one in melbourne.
I thought there was only one in melbourne.

Wow, great, I plan on going to the one in Melbourne. Never heard of the one in Vero Beach. Apartments would like if you tell them you have pets. If you don't mind, what are some pet-friendly apartment buildings you know of? Do any of them have websites? Thanks for any info you can give!

Is it a definate no for birds on campus - thier only little fellas? Just a thought - not sure how practical it is but could you advertise in a vet clinic or somewhere near college for someone to care for them with bird experience where you can visit as often as possible??

I can understand your anxiety. My husband & I ride down to Phillip Is every year for the Aust MotoGP. I'll be away for a week and am stressing about the girls - esp Chicka

i know you're allowed to have pets, my friend lives there and someone near her had a bird that screamed for hours because they left it out on the porch during the day.
