What am I gonna do? I've been feeling SO bad lately.
*I've felt like I'm gonna pass out every single day for a week and two days. I've also been feeling really dizzy and lightheaded.
*I've been really thirsty and having to, um, go, more often (could be heat, though)
*I can now go from EXTREMELY hot to EXTREMELY cold in like 2 seconds, no lie.
*I have headaches almost constantly.
*I feel really tired most of the time, even after sleeping for 12 hours or more.
*My heartbeat is kind of rapid......
*I get really, really shaky occasionally, like, shivering and just shaking really bad.
*If I press my arm against a desk, just enough where it puts a little pressure on my arm, it hurts like it's gonna bruise.
*I've also been really, really snappy lately.

Here's the deal: I've told my mom about the headache and the dizziness and the lightheadedness. She says, "Well, duh. You have a sinus infection." I have that, too, but I think this is something else........anyway, I'm really shy and sweating telling my mom everything, and I don't know what to do. I have several friends telling me I really need to go to the doctor, that this could be bad, especially if I just let it go. But I don't know what to do. I tried to convince her that something's going on and she was just like, "Yeah, that's a sinus infection for you. I have a headache, too, oh well." But several of my friends are really, really worried, and it's driving me nuts because I can't stand to see them look so concerned. It makes me sad. I think I need to do something, but what? I have a doctor's appointment for a physical next Friday. The question is, is that soon enough?

You need to tell your mum everything! If she still doesn't listen and thinks it's just sinus then is there any way you could contact your doctor yourself?

I do not mean to worry you but a lot of the symptoms you stated are symptoms of diabetes and you should be tested. Having said that it could also be a really nasty infection but a couple of your symptoms are ones that should not be ignored.

Please speak to your mum and tell her how worried you are. Good luck and I hope you are feeling better soon.

You need to tell your mother everything you've stated here, when it comes to your health you can't be shy, as coliopi stated, many of the symptoms are those of onset diabetes, and even if thats not the case, you've had these symptoms over a week now, apparently there is a medical issue that needs to be addressed......

That's what both me and my best friend are worried about.... diabetes runs in my family. (My best friend, by the way, is almost an adult.)
Here's one of many conversations we've had about it so far.
"Me August 14 at 5:59pm
Okay, this is entirely random......you remember me telling you the other day I was feeling like I was gonna pass out at school? Earlier I was feeling something like that again.....everywhere i walked i was like walking from side to side....I felt like I was about to pass out. I was swaying really bad. It's better now, but sitting down I still feel a little lightheaded........weird much?

Me August 14 at 7:23pm
Okay, back to "worse". My head feels like it's buzzing and I don't think I"m walking straight- did I mention I"m trying to cook dinner? This ain't cool!

Me August 14 at 7:43pm
I'm scared........

Me August 14 at 9:25pm
Okay, so 2/3 people I've told so far have asked me if I'm pregnant. O.O Do I LOOK like I would even think about.....ugh, nevermind. I talked to Ms. Reynolds via text and she told me to talk to my mom.......I'm afraid to, though. I'm scared. I don't know what to do.......

Me August 14 at 10:18pm
I wish communication weren't so hard. I'd have told my mom like 7 hours ago if it weren't. :(

Me August 15 at 6:00pm
I am SO wiped out, and I have no idea why. Sigh........

My friend August 15 at 10:46pm
goodness, I think you need to get your mom to take you to the doctor. Do you know what's wrong yet?

Me August 15 at 10:47pm
nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I don't like doctors. I'm a chicken. You can call me one, I don't mind, I'd so much rather be a chicken than go to a doctor. But I swear if my head doesn't stop buzzing! Urgh. No clue.

My friend August 15 at 10:49pm
well if you don't know what's wrong, it would be agood idea. They can only help.

Me August 15 at 10:50pm
B-b-b-b-b-b-b-b but....... do I really have to? I still haven't told her....

My friend August 15 at 10:57pm
uh yeah. surely she can see that you haven't been feeling well? and yes i saw your status! sound great :)

Me August 15 at 10:58pm
Why do you have to know I listen to you? Darnit. Yeah, she can........she apparently hasn't noticed all the stuff with the about to pass out and the dizzy and all that, though. (I'm SCARED, Mary Elizabeth! Okay, if you saw me right now, I think you'd be really sad. I'm like shaking....and red.....and about to cry......) Guess what inspired that?

My friend August 15 at 11:01pm
?????

Me August 15 at 11:04pm
You and Molly and all. I got to thinking, and I'm like, "Well, they sure can do a lot....how do they do it all? Well, DUH, they've got God on their side!" Do you really, really think I should talk to my mom? Bottom line is, I'm really scared. I've never felt like this before. It's weird. It's like I'm a walking zombie or half dead or something. I just feel like I'm totally out of whack. I'm so scared I want to cry. (Part of that could be because I REALLY don't want to talk to my mom....I actually asked Ashley to ask her parents what they think because I don't want to talk to my mom....I talked to Ms. Reynolds, too. I don't want to talk to my mom. At ALL.)

My friend August 15 at 11:07pm
I definitely think you should, especially because you don't know what's going on. You won't know until you find out, basically. I'm really glad you've been thinking about that though :) it's ABSOLUTELY true.

Me August 15 at 11:08pm
Sigh. When should I talk to her? Haha, I can't believe I'm just now figuring that out. I have a Chem Honors test tomorrow. :'(

Me August 15 at 11:22pm
You may have noticed I've said this 500 times by now....but I"m SCARED!

My friend August 15 at 11:22pm
Go to the doctor, get out of the chem test? eh? haha I'm kidding, but you do need to go as soon as possible.

Me August 15 at 11:24pm
Okay, fine, I'll do it because you told me to, but I'm SCARED! I'm NOT kidding, I'm about to cry! I'm really scared. I drank plenty of water and I ate fine, what the heck could possibly be going on?! I'm SCARED! One problem....my mom went to bed earlier. Should I talk to her now or in the morning?

Me August 15 at 11:26pm
I'm not trying to say it's the doctor I'm scared of, either......it's.....well.....I can tell you, right?

My friend August 15 at 11:30pm
yes please

Me August 15 at 11:32pm
Okay. You better count yourself as lucky, because you're the only one I would EVER tell about this. My mom has diabetes and my dad's whole side of the family has blood pressure issues. And so yesterday I got to thinking, boy, it's awful weird that I feel so out of whack like this....and I was wondering, well, you know.......yeah, anyway...........THAT'S what I'm scared of.

My friend August 15 at 11:35pm
Um......okay to be totally honest that's kinda what I was worried about. And i don't know if it is either, it's just one of the only health issues I know a whole lot about. But if is, you definitely need to get it checked out so they can deal with it. You will be much worse off if you don't. I will be praying that it's somehting minor though. But you need to get it checked ASAP and I mean it. I don't want anything bad happening to you and your mother doesn't either.

Me August 15 at 11:36pm
But...... okay, there's no way I'm going to argue my way out of this. Alright. I'll talk to her.

Me August 16 at 12:03am
Thank you..........for being here, and for being an amazing friend, and being stern when you have to. lol I PROMISE I WILL talk to her as soon as I get up in the morning.

Me August 16 at 6:55am
And, btw, no, I didn't know.
"
(And, they checked my BP the other day when I went to the doctor for the sinus infection....so it's not BP) I know I need to talk to her, but I'm having real trouble convincing myself to do it. I don't know why, but I'd rather do ANYTHING than talk to her....

You do not have to speak to her directly if this is preventing you from sharing heath concerns. Speak to a school nurse. Speak to parent of a friend. Call your doctors office and speak to his or her nurse for advice. But you MUST speak. I offer to speak to your mom if you wish. You merely need to give me permission and your mom's phone number. I am what is called an advanced practice nurse and would be able to help her understand why these symptoms and your concerrns should be addressed before Friday. In meantime make sure you are drinking enough water, try to reduce the amount of sugar in your diet. There are other conditions that might make you feel so ill, but many of your complaints are consistent with diabetes. Some of the other possibilities are also urgent. It is time for you to act on your own behalf.

Actually, I hate sugar and do not eat most sugary things...unless drinking gatorade is bad, then I can't think of any sugar I eat that would be a problem. We don't have a school nurse. I know I need to speak.....but.....I'm not sure how cool my mom would be with a random person calling her? I think she'd kill me for going to the internet first....but....I TRIED to talk to her. She pretty much dismissed me. But honestly, the offer sounds really enticing....

The offer stands. You would be surprised how much sugar is in common foods. But as I stated earlier there are several other issues that are suggested by your symptoms. Finally, yes, your mom might be startled to get my call but I would likely be able to move her to a discussion of your need for work *up. All that said if you are unable to take this step then Friday will be an opportunity to speak directly with a health care provider.

An alternative would be for you to turn up at the hospital's casualty department. They won't send you home without you having been checked out if you are showing signs of illness, if you are under 16 your mother may need to be informed but isn't this what you want/need?

If I were you I would take Barbara up on her offer :) Hope you feel better soon

You're thread is titled "what am I gonna do?" Now is the time to do something. A trip to the emergency department /casualty department is warranted based on your described symptoms. They would likely examine you, do blood work and and ultrasound of your abdomen. None of this is particularly frightening or painful. But you asked our advice and you are receiving a consistent return message. 1. Tell mom or show her this thread
2. If not one, seek care immediately from a health care provider or urgent care setting. 3. My offer still stands. My work email is [email protected]. I am director of refugee health at Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington university medical center in St.Louis. I would be happy to help you communicate with your mom via email or phone. Time to make a decision on the advice you sought.

Ummm.....probably because my mom freaks out over any little thing. If I have a scratch she's like, "OMGYOUREGONNAGETANINFECTIONANDDIE". It scares me.

Something else that bothers me is that you seem a little afraid of your mother's reaction, why is this?

Hmmm I got just the opposite inpression, from the way you were talking I thought you were saying that no matter what was wrong with you that your mother trivializes it and wouldn't get you care regardless of how severe the symptoms were, anyway, since she now knows get the medical attention you need before it becomes more serious...........

She's weird like that. Any time I say something's wrong with me she can figure out something to come back at me with. I say "I have a headache." She says, "So? So do I." Then she gets all freaked out. O.O

Hi there,
I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes just over a year ago, 8 of your 10 symptoms are what sent me to my Doctor to see what was wrong. I really suggest getting to see yours ASAP. Complications to uncontrolled Diabetes are extremely painful and some are irreversible.
I totally know where your Mom is coming from, I have a Mom and I am a Mom and would hate anything bad to happen to my children which is why you MUST go to the Doctor ASAP.
I have my bood sugar under control now and feel like a totally different person. It may not even be Diabetes but your never going to find out if you don't go check it out.
I hope you keep us posted on your progress.

Hi again, yes sugar is the enemy but it is also carbs, they burn into sugar and the speed they hit your blood system is based on how high the carb count of what you ate was. There are good carbs and bad carbs, the glycemic index also is helpful to chose good foods to eat. YES Gatorade is bad, it is loaded with salt and sugar to replenish electrolytes lost during excersize. They have a sugar free one now but it's hard to find but it tastes pretty good. If you don't mind me asking, how is your eyesight?

OK so I read through the entire thread and see you are aware of what might be going on, sorry I just saw your symptoms and panicked! I hope you get the medical care you need. I hope it's not out of bounds to promote another forum, it's for Diabetes, you can check it out and ask any questions and they are answered with the upmost respect and support is amazing and it sounds like you need all the support you can get. The forum is Dlife and the link is Type 2 Clubhouse - Diabetes Support Forum

Take care.

The thing that's bothering me the most is feeling faint and the headaches....the feeling faint just screams UNNATURAL to me. My mom doesn't seem to think it's Diabetes, or at least didn't mention it. Thing is, people are saying ASAP....does that mean I can, or can't wait until Friday? And my eyesight has always been bad.....since I was like 2, I've worn glasses.

If your feeling so bad I don't understand why you would want to wait, if your thinking since your going for a physical you can wait and get the symptoms checked at the same time, just know with those symptoms he probably won't even give you a physical...........

No, I don't want to wait, but I may have to. It sounded like we were lucky to get an appointment that early.
