Where can a girl go for good clothing anymore?

I was shopping for clothing yesterday, and that's what brought up this question.

I'm mainly asking the ladies, but has anyone else noticed the bizarre styles we've had lately? I'm getting quite annoyed by finding lots of strange new styles; I can hardly find anything I like anymore.

Particularly strange (IMPO), is what I like to call 'The Potato Sack'. It's those shirts that are tapered at the hips, and purposely add fabric around the abdomen. And purposely ruined pants are strange to me. I can splat paint, stain, and tatter the fabric at home if I wanted any of that.

By no means am I ridiculing these stores, I'm just confused.

Would anyone else agree?

Old Navy has always been really good to me, but you have to walk past their "fashoinista" section to the more plain jane stuff. They keep their unruined jeans on the jeanwall and have a lot of normal tshirts on the tables that are usually something like 2/$15

But I agree, the current styles always get more and more mind-boggling, I'm just waiting for parachute pants to come back in style... lol!

Oops, just noticed I accidentally wrote 'tapered around the waist'. I meant tapered around the hips. A shirt actually looks great if it's tapered around the waist.

I can't agree with this more! I went to a few stores tying to shop, ready to spend money and ended up walking out of the stores empty handed!!!!! I'm particularly curvy up top AND bottom so that "puffy in the middle" style makes me look bigger! EVERYTHING seems to be like this... I have a very tiny friend who looks amazing in these types of clothing but for someone with a little more weight its very distressing...IMO

I agree completely. Living in Texas and working for a very casual company, I get to wear jeans and a tank or t-shirt every day. Those are pretty easy, but I actually have a waist so a lot of styles just don't work. I'm not built like an adolescent boy so those potato sacks look worse on me than the average person - I look like a big blob...as opposed to a pillar draped in fabric, like skinny women.

I do, however, like some of the empire waist tops and dresses. It's really hit or miss at lots of places. I like Macy's and Old Navy.

OK ladies here goes my admission. Because of the reasons you state I sometimes go to the goodwill store to find the "old" things that fit much better. It works for me!!!

Ok I'm not a woman so my views may be out of line, we always advocate re-homing birds, why can't it be that way with clothing?Church Boutiques, Good Will, Salvation Army ect, lots of choices, (somtimes even brand new) cheaper prices and the money goes to good causes....just the view of a male with no style or flare for fashion :09:

I agree with both you and SB. I often find myself stopping off at a Goodwill or some other second-hand store. That's where more than half of my wardrobe comes from.

Also not a lady, I do most of my clothes shopping at Target ....

It's pretty hard to screw up jeans and a t-shirt ... yet they do!

Several years ago I was in a lab with some coworkers and I commented how I saw brand new jeans for sale with holes cut in them priced at $80-$100. I thought it was insane to have to pay $20-25 for ones WITHOUT holes. I couldn't imagine why someone would pay more for holes.

Then one of my coworkers (who apparently values those holes) said "Oh, I don't pay for those expensive ones I know how to make holes in my jeans."

He said it as if it was some big corporate secret and that being able to put holes in jeans what his greatest life achievement and claim to fame. Then I considered his worth ethic and what he had produced recently and realized - yep, that probably is his greatest skill!

I also HATE the potato sack styles. I am quite curvy (not fat... just have curvy hips/chest with a small waist) so I need more tailored looks. I've been buying a lot of empire waist items lately.

I end up shopping all over and trying on a lot of clothes. It is a frustrating experience, but I am almost always successful. Some stores I shop at include Macys (including the teens section), the Gap, Ann Taylor Loft, and Express. And I recently bought an adorable dress at MaxStudio.

I also dispise skinny jeans. I suppose they are fine for really skinny girls, but not when your legs are toned/athletic. Honestly, I'm not sure who actually likes skinny jeans. Jeans in general are hard enough. I started buying the curvy jean style, but the waist always seems too stretchy and I dislike belts (bunching around the waist looks bad). I think I will try going back to J. Jill because I've had some luck with their jeans in the past.

I just bought about twenty tops from the shop Colorado recently (mostly birthday presents from the people I was with!), they had a big sale. Lots of the shirts had price tags of $80+ but I got them for about $10 - $40 each! They are all really nice - perfectly fitted, in plain subtle colours and styles, and in nice fabrics (I hate anything scratchy or stiff!) I imagine it's an american shop with a name like Colorado! Also, they sell fantastic shoes. They are all really really comfy and not too bad looking. I bought a pair of leather sandals from there about twelve years ago and they are still in perfect condition and just as comfy (perfectly moulded to my feet). I put a bit of saddle soap on them once a year and that's all I've done. The leather is a little cracked but I'm sure it wouldn't be if I'd put saddle soap on them more often and not worn them in the ocean. But anyway, Colorado is a great shop for comfy clothes that are still good-looking!
