First I was dying to finish my high school and start college
And then I way dying to finish college and start working
Then I way dying to marry and have children.
And then I was dying for my children to grow old enough so I could go back to work. But then I was dying to retire.
And now I am dying.
And suddenly I realized I forgot to live.

Please don't let this happen to you. Appreciate your current situation and enjoy each day. Your friend

I guess its never to late to start living, but maybe if we're lucky some of the younger folks here will get the message and live their lives by these wise words of wisdom, it's all to often that life gets in the way of living

I am a very goal-oriented person. And as I get older (42), I realize how foolish the notion of "when is my real life going to begin?" was when I was younger. Always "after I get this job done" or "after I achieve that". Too often life is what is happening while we prepare for the life we think we are supposed to have. We have control over some things, but not others, and sometimes we just need to learn to roll with it. Don't become a total passenger all of the time, but don't demand to drive all the time either. Frankly, you don't know the way there.

Ant, I was thinking about something similar the other day but your thread inspired me to write a poem so here it is!

One day I sat at a bus stop in the busy busy city
The people running to and fro, to get there in a hurry.
I began to ponder to myself as I sat and enjoyed the moment.
Where are all these people going
like tiny scurrying rodents?

We are always waiting for the day to get old, get thin, get far
Why cant we just enjoy ourselves and accept us as we are?
Life goes by so fast, that people often miss it.
When all we really have to to is settle, sit and listen.

So When you go for a walk today, to work, to school, to play
stop to ponder, to look, to breath. Life is light this way.
See the trees for the green they are, the sky for the blue it is.
Try to read between the lines. Things look different like this.

Live every day to the fullest,
every love to the limit,
and every moment, like you've never lived it before.

When children have consequences for bad behavior, it's not so much punishment, as it is "molding" a well rounded individual. It's a moral responsibility to teach right from wrong....and I might add, as a teacher(retired) that there are many parents who fall down on the job. It's much easier to ignore, than to address. Punishing a child has very little to do with being a bad mother....

Wildheart,

I think the fact that you feel bad about punishing probably makes you a good mother. If you go ahead and punish when appropriate, then it makes you a superb mother.

I think many of us agree there are few things more annoying than visiting a friend who never disciplines their children. The kids are always running around, acting like animals. One has to wonder how they are ever going to adjust to life in the adult world, where that kind of behavior will certainly have dire consequences.

I also thought about it this way. If something were to happen to me, and my buddy had to be adopted, I'm sure he would have a much better chance of finding a loving home if he were well-behaved. I didn't always succeed at it (potty mouth, and very appropriate use), though I hope to learn from my mistakes with my next fid.

My late mother and myself always had a stormy relationship.
Our personalities clashed for years, we never ever saw eye to eye.

One day whilst still in school, in 1978, history class, I was so bored I began to think about my mom, my thoughts towards her.
I put a pen to paper.....................and have never forgot them

That is what happens when you rush a post just before you go out the door!

I wasnt talking about a human child nor was I talking about punishment for being naughty.

The vet told me that I must keep Sterretjie locked up in her tiny sleeping cage during the day for the next 4 weeks because she bumps her blood feathers and then bites them until it bleeds. I did not listen to him - I just did not have the heart to punish her for something that is not even her fault. I did however lock her in her BIG cage and pushed it outside on the stoep. Earlier in the day my maid phoned me and told me she was bleeding again. I rushed home and stopped the bleeding and took her back to the vet.

I called myself a bad mother because I just cant do what the vet said.

Sorry for causing the confusion.

Poor Sterrietjie....I do hope that you can solve the problem. If it's any consolation, Fred often wants to be in his smaller sleep cage. If the two cages are close together, he will choose it! Maybe Sterrietjie won't mind, as much as you think?

You have a maid...I wish I had one!!!LOL!!!

I am coping pretty well now. I miss Hiroshi and think about him everyday. The memories are good and keep me smiling with the occassional tear. I am planning to get another parrot once I have steady income and I can't wait
