Magpie kicked to death

I was on Skype talking to Melissa, laughing and having fun and looking out the window I see 2 kids, 12-14 years old, running after a little magpie that was unable to fly, I'm thinking 'great, they're trying to help it, that's sweet!' until I see one of them kick it. I didn't believe my eyes at first, but they keep chasing it and kicking at it.
At this point I'm pretty angry, I wanted to go out and confront them but I'm not very confident so I tried to find something I could throw at them from the balcony to divert their attention, I looked around and found a glass candle. I grab that and go out on my balcony, but they'd chased the magpie behind a restaurant that's outside my place.
I keep looking trying to figure out where they're at, then I see them a little further down the field, but I can just see their upper bodies because a roof and bushes are blocking them, I tried to see through the bushes, I could somewhat see their feet but not the magpie, I figured they'd lost interest.

I couldn't have been more wrong, the magpie was still running flapping it's wings kinda, I think, I was really angry at this point and it happened sort of fast. What I see next is one of these idiots kick it so hard it flew probably over 5ft, all stiff.
At this point I grabbed my sweater and my shoes and walked down there, I was out in about 1m and a TON of magpies had already gathered around the deceased magpie and I saw these kids looking and pointing at them, they might have been laughing, I'm not sure, like I said, I was super angry.
I calmly asked them why they're kicking animals and they just grabbed their coats and RUN, I walk after them staring them down, they disappeared behind a building but I saw them down the block about 1-2m later, I walked towards them again but lost them.
Then I walked home and did the dishes to try to calm down, no luck, I'm still super angry and it's been well over an hour. I'm waiting on the cops to call me back so I can report them.
They lost a key which was unfortunately gone when I walked down the second time.

I'm going to go out tomorrow and put a flower next to the magpie. I don't wanna do it now 'cause they're all still awake and I don't want them to think I'm gonna do something bad to it.
Oh and behind this restaurant there's a playground for kids, and there were 1-2 families at LEAST, seeing this. They didn't do a damn thing! Unbelievable!!!
I can't express my true feelings or how angry I really am without being banned from here so I'll just stop the thread here. Ugh I wish I'd gone out sooner, I could've prevented this! :headwall::headwall:

What kinda being is being bred these days? God help us if kicking wildlife to death is classed as entertainment.

That is so upsetting. It was hard to read. I'm so sorry you had to see that, and I understand how traumatizing it must be to have seen it first hand, and could definitely understand the rage of seeing it too . I'm so sorry for the little bird. Life in the wild is tough enough without idiot humans to contend with too. I know you're in a different part of the world from me, but sadly this sort of stuff happens everywhere :(.

Yeah I might speak to the school counselor tomorrow if I'm still this angry, I don't like being angry. I've dealt with anger issues before and thought I was alright now... Idk I keep seeing them chasing it and kicking it and then the last kick, it keeps playing in my mind.

I dont want to comment about this sad sad affair except to say Rest in Peace little Magpie you are in a better place now...my very first pet bird was a wild magpie (called her Maggie she and a blind crow called Shakespear) who got injured and when she healed though never caged and was always free to fly in and out the open window which she did all the time after she got well and would go fly about for a few hours each day but for the rest of her life she refused to go back to the wild...I love magpies...so so so sad...let the Anger my friend go and remember the Beauty of these creatures and the love they give...that love is way more powerful than the cruelty of children who very obviously have something seriously wrong with them and have either genetically or through social deprivation turned into humans whose brains are totally imbalanced...report it to the police and place your little flower where it fell and have a good cry and then let it go for there is no more you can do:smile015:

I loved your post Birdigirl :). I know some forums don't like this sort of stuff posted because it's only for ranting's sake and can upset some members greatly. Parrot Forums is pretty liberal. I see Sebastian's point, and sometimes it's cathartic to share with other like minded individuals. But you have some really good points.

Try and look at it from Birdigirl's perspective Sebastian, as difficult as it is. I'm glad you have access to your school counselor though, if you need to talk. Hugs.

Oh if this post does upset anyone then I'm really sorry, that obviously wasn't my intention. I just felt I needed to vent 'cause it's been affecting me pretty bad, even today I feel pretty bad and keep seeing it played in my head. It didn't even occur to me that it might affect others too... I'm sorry!
Idk why it affected me this much, but I guess it did...

Thank you Birdgirl, for the story and words. That's so cool that you had a magpie, how'd that happen? Take her home when she was injured and that started it all? They are such intelligent birds, most people don't know that (not saying you don't, just in general, the everyday people that think birds are just birds).
Do you remember how old Maggie got?
I've reported it to the police, they said it was good that I called them. I didn't think they'd care 'cause y'know, to most people it's 'just a magpie' and it's not a person or a protected species.
Just trying to let it go now.

Please, please, print out your original post, or even edit it, but send it as a letter to the local school, and CC the local newspaper. Children who abuse animals can grow up to abuse people, and respect for fellow living beings in not innate, but must be taught. Good can come of this.

I've reported them to the police, I didn't think to call the newspapers, I can do that this afternoon or during lunch, good idea!
I know, it's ironic because I've just finished an essay about serial killers and whether it's nature or nurture, and I've found that most serial killers start out on animals, then I see this...

The Magpie Maggie was caught by a neighbours dog and had managed to fly free of him into our garden and had a great big gash on her wing and of course was in shock when I found her and carried her in tears to my dad who bandaged her...you couldnt bring her to a vet back then as they were considered pests.( still are sadly but vets treat them now if they are brought in ) ...she healed up pretty fast though and getting her to eat proved a little problematic but eventually she decided she liked tinned catfood best of all...she ate fruit too and later ate almost anything we ate...she lived with us for over 7 years and never nested properly during that time or bonded with another magpie...she was extremely intelligent and could open the little drawers of a jewlery box to get her treats. My mom and dad tried on several occasions to set her free as she just kept flying back to me when I tried...they even took her a few miles away once to where there were lots of other magpies around a farm but Maggie was home and tapping on my window before my parents got back. She was an amazing buddy...she would also get into lots of trouble stealing peoples jewlery and bring it in the window to her nest on top of the wardrobe...rings earrings anything shiny that she could carry was woven into a very highly decorated construction on top of the wardrobe. (Well okay perhaps more randomly strewn than decorative but it was her construction and to her it wasnt randon for if you moved something she would put it back where she had left it ) I used to hope shed find a mate and bring him to the nest to raise babies but it never happened...I dont actually know whether Maggie was indeed a boy or a girl but to me she was my Maggie :) Your post sad and heartbreaking though it is has brought back many happy memories to me of my lovely Maggie. Im glad those memories are now uplifting you a little too :)

That's a beautiful story! I wanted a magpie when I was a kid lol
Do you still have her nest?
They really are intelligent, I just wish non-bird people could see it too.

Yeah, I saw them out there playing soccer about 30m ago, had to close the curtains and do dishes to stop myself from getting too worked up...

No sadly I dont have her nest my mom cleared it out...actually she would also clear it out regularly while Maggie was alive but Maggie would build it again :) but once she was gone it was cleared out for good...I kept one of her feathers for years though until it disintegrated over time.
