It's a sad reality. I see around here these parrot sanctuaries "we are the forever home; will never give them away/adopt them out". Make you realize that promise lives basically as long as the owner does in most cases.

It makes you wonder what this person was thinking in terms of their longevity? I am in no way shooting down the fantastic work that was done in giving so many birds a home and no easy task carrying that out and trying to raise funds. RESPECT! But why was there no planning for 'after'? It could be tried and failed or maybe never tried. It interests me. I sincerely hope there is a happy ending.

Until I had read the first story I had not really taken provisions for BB . My Son knew he would take care of him but, I realized he has no idea.

SO I worked on a dairy for a week. Food , routine , likes , dislikes. The only veggies BB likes cooked are carrots. Took me awhile to figure it out. <- things like that are important . It is urgent you make a list for someone . If not your Fid will really have a hard time adjusting and you will have a frustrated care taker.

But, there is a next step and that is incorporating your Parrot into your 'Will." Since 'Will' may not translate; A Document that defines your wants and wishes upon your Death or that point when you can no longer control your health and finances. US Law has grown to better ensure that your Parrots are cared for after you no longer can.

At first, you may see this as a waste of money. But, the primary reason is commonly the Money. And, that is the Kid's just do not have enough or can not bring what they have to care for our aging Parrot(s) - think Avian Vet care costs 20 to 50 years into the future.

If you do not have a Will, even if you are healthy and young, please consider creating one. If costs are a an issue, Web Search Wills and then Wills with Pet care / support. Prepare from what you find for your State and bring it with you. Face time with your Attorney can be cut in half by simple being prepared.

Good Point. I do have one and made sure when my Son turned 18 he made one. I started him doing this hoping he keeps it active and up to date. EVERYONE needs on.

We have something here called a Pet Passport and I have put a link up before, I digress, but it enables you to put all that kinds of info about your pet into it, started but not finished Plum's, if you think about it a life together is quite complex and you evolve and adapt as you go along probably without much thought, you just do. So racking your brains trying to cover everything is a task.

600 birds at a Canadian refuge need homes ASAP

Saw this on a FB newsfeed this morning. The owner of this refuge has died, and now the volunteers are scrambling to find homes for their 600 orphaned birds.

I hope a lot of rescue read this and make sure there is something in place for them.

What a horribly sad situation. Too often animals find themselves at a terrible disadvantage without fault. Need to check a bit more and see what options are available.

Pet welfare after we are gone is the ultimate expression of responsibility!!
