I was surprised at this outcome, and it may portend further seismic stresses to world communities. (thought it would be a close decision to not Brexit)
While the EU declared negotiations to be complete, there is the possibility of nuanced talks as the break-up process unfolds. And what of PM David Cameron? Some say he should leave due to his strong "stay" campaign. And Scotland possibly leaving the UK to join the EU?

Watching the Today show and see the PM officially resigned. No kidding when Sailboat said witnessing "a true change in History." And it's still changing. I'll be checking out what the BBC and CBC to see what other countries are reporting. Working outside the US, I've found US news doesn't always report everything.

DC, the PM has resigned and due to vacate by October. Bumpy roads for a while, but sure we will get through. Very resilient nation. Maybe do some good worldwide to show the power of the electorate.

Way too early to map a course, yet alone read one. At this point, its instant reactions and when the dust settles over the weekend things will be clearer.
If any Nation is in a strong enough position to pull away from the EU its the UK and the primary reason is because they have a Currency!
My speculation is that the UK will be a Stronger, Safer Nation as a result of this election.

I have several UK friends who would disagree with you and they didn't win by that much. It was 52 to 48% so it was a pretty close race. Now the Scots are talking about a referendum to split from Britain. They do not agree with this at all.

It was still a majority vote in favour, there can only be one winner! One person, one vote! Which ever way in any election there are always people left unhappy but it is how they deal with it that matters.
FYI And the Scots have been threatening anybody and everybody with another referendum even before today because they were not happy they lost two years ago.

I was clarifying the that it wasn't a landslide and there's almost as many people unhappy as happy. Obviously, the majority rules, but that doesn't mean it's a good thing or that everyone is happy for it.
That's true about the Scots, but this has probably given them a lot more power to push it through.

Whenever the citizens of nation have the right to vote, some will be happy others will be upset at the outcome. I hope that once the dust settles, this decision by the UK voters will help their country prosper and retain their sense of independence (as a US citizen, that's an important one IMO).
On another note, I wonder how this will affect our upcoming election? We are still very close with our friends across the pond and politically speaking, major changes in the UK still has an effect on the US and visa versa. Hopefully this will help put both our countries on a positive path.

Personally I think this a portent of things to come. With the exit of Britain from the EU a lot of members are rethinking their membership. Greece, Spain and Portugal have to be paying especially close attention, and I heard just before noon that if a certain party in France does well in the upcoming elections, they could possibly be doing a Frec-xit too. The EU has to give the member countries more of stake in running the Union, and rethinking the employment issue. Open borders yes, but permanent resident and employment are one of the key issues, as workers from less prosperous countries migrate to those doing well, to say nothing of the political migrants from Syria and the other beleaguered countries.
Britain's exit will be a slow withdrawal over 2 years or more, with plenty of time to second guess the results of the referendum, even a second one, now that the leavers have buyers remorse. Stay tuned to see history unfold on Facebook!

PS, Northern Ireland is still a EU member, so how are they going to control borders there, with the checking of passports etc that a closed border implies.

At the time I started this Thread, there had not been specific numbers for how the votes had split only that the 'Number of Votes' was greater than anticipated.

Northern Ireland is the same it voted to stay in the EU but because its part of the UK its likely that the outcome of this referendum will now cause a border to exist once again between Northern and Southern Ireland splitting our country in two as well. The Northern Ireland politicans are also calling for a referendum to leave thr UK but they are not likely to get that I would think. On another note I know that we in Ireland were given ŕeferendum after referendum here to approve treaties in Europe until we voted the way Europe wanted us to vote...the same could happen yet with the UK though Im not sure the people in the UK will consider revisiting this particular referendum again. I think this could do a lot of good in the long term for the EU as it will make the EU take a long hard look at itself...there are a lot of things that are wrong in Europe and need to be fixed ...time will tell

Many of the "Leave" advocates in positions of power seemed surprised the referendum passed in the affirmative. My impression is the negotiations really will begin in earnest as there was no pre-set template ready to be "switched on." While both sides realize the gravity of the mandate, each will attempt to garner the best terms, though the EU will seek to dissuade other members from exiting.
The reality is the UK may look quite different five years on. I wonder if they will grow closer economically to the powerhouse commonwealth nations of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand? The closest of military and intelligence ties exist between the 4 aforementioned nations/entities and the U.S.
I've been a long-time subscriber to the Economist (weekly UK "newspaper") and eagerly await the next edition!
