It is heartbreaking. From what I understand most of the hoarders start off with just one or two. People will drop off there unwanted and it blooms from there.

One hoarder said they would contact people on Craig list offering to just take the bird. Most would say no but after they can't sell they would call the hoarder back telling them to just come take the bird.

If you listen to the News Reporter she stated there is a regulation in place they could only have three dogs on a lot that size . NOTHING in place saying how many Birds. RAID AT ATLANTA DOCTOR'S HOME: Hundreds of birds living in poor conditions seized from home | WSB-TV

Most rescue operate on donations. A few do not adopt birds out. I know there is one in NC that does not adopt out and they are growing. Relying on donations and free labor to build more outside Aviary for the birds and food donations. The birds stay outside all year. When asked they say the birds adapt to the weather. They cover the outside aviary with plastic. They are doing well now but what happens when/if Donations stop . The owner is left to care for these birds alone.

There are no regulations in place. No one wants to be told how many birds they can keep. If you start taking in dogs there are regulations in place. You are required to have a kennel permit. Should the same not be put in place for the protection of the Birds ? Don't attack the poster I am just asking a question :) A lot of people would be placed in the regulation of having to have a Permit because of the number of birds they keep. I have two dogs and I am required to have a license for them. Tags. Shots . Are birds any less important ?

I only have one bird. Two years this coming October. I do not have the time or money to care for more than one . So I know my limit. Working a full time job there just is no time. BUT what if I were home all day . Who knows.

This is the 3rd I have read about in less than 30 days. Most of the posters are just saying I can take a few. Flippers come out in great numbers wanting " a few of the birds " . Birds are adopted out. People are happy . The situation went away . On to the next .

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
Very distressing situations, Chris. Innocent and unloved parrots living the gamut from monotonous and safe to horrific lives at the hands of depraved humans. Unfortunately the media relegates the woes of parrots to sound bytes reflecting a misunderstanding of their deep consciousness and incredibly long lives.

It is hard to place a finger on the multitude of causes, but certainly a deep ignorance of aviculture is evident. More worthy is raising the awareness level so we can turn the corner and avoid the hordes of unwanted parrots peering through rusted cages, subsiding on sunflower seeds and Cheetos. There are only so many homes to accept these birds; perhaps the growth of dedicated sanctuaries offers the best hope of a "forever home" filled with love and compassion. Besides caring for my own fids, I donate what I can to dedicated animal charities. Also plan to dedicate more of myself post-retirement to the creatures that mean the most to me.

The licensure and regulation of companion parrots is fraught with hazard. Well intended and possible workable, it cannot be carried over directly from the statutes protecting mammals. Chief among them are the "parental" laws of CITES, and how they may be unwittingly manipulated to severely restrict and possibly confiscate many of our most beloved companions.

A balance is needed to avoid descending into the hole of despair and hopelessness. While the horrors of these stories shock and sicken, it is also critical to embrace the goodness that is so evident within this forum. So many dedicated parronts eager to learn and share their successes.

Sadly, it is going to get much worst before it will get even a little better in North America.

The 'In Thing' of having a 'Parrot' of the late 80's into the 90's and as it peaked in the early 2000's ended with the Financial Crash of seven years ago, and which, we are still suffering today. All, as new parrot ownership continues to decline.

The numbers are shocking; I have heard twenty - thirty thousand and told that could be low. Numbers based on past /current sales of medium / large Parrot bands, less sales of Micro Chips crossed with Avian Vet /Vet's Client numbers (which are seen as 'cared for Parrots') and a couple of other number adjustments. Small Bird /Parrot numbers are unknown, since as a group, very few Owners Vet their Birds and even fewer Breeders purchase bands.

Timelines (affect of long lived Parrots), even with poor health will push the population Peak ten to fifteen years into the future. Hard realities: The back edge of the Bell Shaped Curve is expected to be much steeper than a standard curve, i.e. much higher death rates.

Adding Government oversight, which form will be pressured by PETA and like groups will result in restrictions that I do not see 'good' Owners being at all comfortable with.

So very sorry for this true downer!
