Have you ever posted an item for sale on Craigslist?

Here's a question for you... I know a lot of you browse Craigslist, but have you ever been a seller?

I have an item to sell, and I don't want to leave it at a store to sell on consignment since they take such a large percentage. I also don't want to list it on a website that takes a percentage of my profit for their fee (although less than a brick and mortar store would). Especially if there is a 'free' way to list my item such as Craigslist. No, it's not a bird :).

Of course I will use the more common sense precautions such as meet in a public place, tell the buyer they need to have the exact amount of money (can't make change), beware of scammers that you can smell a mile away, etc. What have your experiences been as a seller?

I have sold two items on Craig's List, a lazy boy recliner and a Tony Little Gazelle. For both sells I provided my cell phone number. I was contacted by two ladies, one for each. I texted them pictures of what I was selling and they did come to my home and bought the items. No issues but I totally understand the concern.

I posted several pictures of both items and the buyers were happy. Ask me questions, I can give you info where I can.

So you didn't include pics right on your ad? This item will most likely draw a male buyer. Not that it matters... It's small enough that I can easily bring it in my car and say to meet in front of Starbucks or somewhere.

One thing I remember a friend telling me was when they were selling something, they had so many flakes. Several people made appointments to come over to see their stuff, but flaked out. They either bought somewhere else, or changed their mind without even a courtesy call.

For those of you who have been a seller, was it easy to post and do the transaction? I am not super computer savvy (I can do the forum lol) but easier it is, the more convenient it would be for me.

I had many pics posted. I didn't want any players. Post pics for sure, include angle photos. The more photos the better and more positive response. Don't be afraid to ask for contact info and ASK for a neutral meeting location. If meeting take peepes you trust with you!!! The more peeps the better and the better your security.

My local police department allows their parking lot to be used for online sales transactions. I've heard of some departments that will even send an officer out to hang out with you if you wish. Check out what your PD has to offer.

I've had great luck with Craigslist in some cities, and terrible in others. The terrible times were mainly that I got a bunch of spammy texts and no real people, not that I was in any danger. The vast majority of people I sold things too were clean, nice people.

I have had people meet me at my apartment or RV when selling larger furniture, but I spoke with them over the phone first. Driving to a neutral spot for other stuff, well some times the other party didn't show but that worked well for most of the time. I try to have them contact me when they are ready to pick the item up.

Another option beyond Craigslist is city papers, or something like Pennysaver (Pittsburgh, I don't know if they are in other places) or IWanna in the south. A lot of these publications will let you have a limited amount of free listings for items under a certain dollar amount, like maybe $25, and a minimal fee for things more than that.

I have never posted my phone number. I use craigslist email relay and give number out to those that email me politely.

If it's gonna be a male buyer definitely meet at police station or other public place where people are likely to be around.

If any email gives you a bad feeling just ignore it.

I recentlly posted a wanted ad and gave out my number. The guy never followed thru but was acting like he was lookin for what I wasn't offering.

I asked him to stop texting me. So far so good.

It's easy. Just use common sense and be safe - meet in a public spot, bring someone with you if possible, cash only.
And, yes, expect flakes - consider it the "cost" of the free advertising! : )

I buy sell ALL the time, love to dicker.

That said, there are A LOT of scammers. Prepare for a lot of email spam. Only accept cash, and meet in a public area.
