I'm pretty sure my brother was just smoking weed in his room (right across from mine) and I could care less about what he smokes but I have talked to him numerous time about not doing it in the house because I have animals that are extremely sensitive to that kind of stuff (Parrot obviously, and my rat(s) ((though down to one rat now)) ) but he NEVER listens and my parents could care less because he's their precious boy (he's the oldest kid in my family) it's so frustrating I cannot wait until he goes back to college and permanently moves out.

Does he at least close the door??? Seen as no one cares but you, maybe you need to shut your door til he leaves. Sucks for you and your animals. Sorry your dealing with this.

My door is almost always closed but it still seeps through and it's so frustrating. I honestly wouldn't care too much if it was just me but when it affects my animals' health just:/

I partake (don't worry I keep it away from the birds), and it shouldn't harm your birds if they are not in the same room. If you can't get him to stop at all, and if you're very concerned, put something down on the door like a towel. However, I think your birds should be fine if they're not in the same room since smoke would have difficulty reaching under the door. Think about it - it has to rise after sinkning under the door slit, so it is improbable that large amounts are reaching your birds.

Furthermore, if he's just some college student he probably isn't even smoking enough to really do damage to the birds since it's expensive. I don't know the full situation though. The smell itself won't harm them and VERY strong (makes you think there's more than there actually is), it's the smoke that's the problem. So you will be annoyed but your birds are probably fine imho. Just don't let him puff in their faces or smoke up the room that they're in - this is what leads to irritation.

It's definitely not like teflon though in terms of toxicity. Remember - smell isn't an accurate indicator of danger - burning teflon is odorless and deadly, while marijuana gives a very strong stench but nowhere near as dangerous.

That must be incredibly annoying though. The smell is very potent, and if you weren't a fan... well let's just say I wouldn't be happy either.

I've seen birds that were abused by potheads though. It's really sad. This poor cockatoo was in a small cage and it was exposed to a constant miasma of thick pot smoke. Poor thing must have been irritated all over its skin. Of course it was a plucker. Now its basically damaged for life. It's a real shame that they have to ruin everything for people who show respect for other living things.

Alright I won't worry too much about it. It's still obnoxious because I've repeatedly told him not to do it inside.

And he had an internship over summer so I think he mighty still have some cash left over from that since my parents pay for food and clothes and such for him

I don't mind smokers of any kind at all I just HATE when they do it around animals of any kind ESPECIALLY ones that have a sensitive respiratory system.

He's a very frustrating person to deal with x.x

DANG!
Very sorry!
Yeah, I think 'd really indulge myself in insulation/towels/such as that. Maybe surf the 'net for DIY draft-stoppers. Maybe you could get/borrow an air freshener.
Great example for a big bro', huh?

Yeah unfortunately a decent air purifier is out of my price range right now but I'll definitely start stuffing towels under my door until he leaves.

How do your parents tolerate the marijuana smell lol? I would think that alone would be enough to make him cut it out. I guess some people are really indifferent to their kids doing that.

I'm vindictive enough that I'd find out the homeowners insurance company and policy number and send an email informing them that there's indoor smoking happening at the property in question. It'll raise their insurance by anywhere from a little to a lot. But I'm kinda mean that way.

Don't make Beatrice come over there!

The more I think about this, the madder I get.
I have a strong feeing that you're twice the human being and citizen your brother is. I hope he sees the light(s) some day.

I would avoid getting external people involved because the penalties for getting involved with marijuana are quite high. Is it really worth your brother having a mark on their record that prevents them from getting a future job? Calling the insurance people might cause trouble internally in the family too. Instead I recommend getting your parents more involved in the issue since it seems strange that they're not concerned. Try to solve the issue domestically through them, and explain that it will affect the home's insurance rates and could even potentially get the police involved.

The access of the smell into your 'room' implies that either it is entering from the doorway or is coming in from the heating duct. If coming in from the heating duct, there is no way to halt that without involve a major cost and clearly that is not happening. Since, you indicated that it was entering around /under the door, placing a towel at the base of the door will help.

Any other suggestions all involve money and you have already covered that point.

I'm a vindictive witch, but I'm not horrible. Notice I said "smoking". I didn't specify pot smoking. Smoking tobacco is perfectly legal, and if that's what the insurance company wants to assume, fine. And I've stopped caring about certain things. Why should Owlet be the only one to have to deal with any sort of negativity? Why doesn't the brother or the parents have to live with the consequences of their own choices. My homeowners insurance specifically asks if there are any smokers in the house and if so, do they smoke inside the house. They ask this question every single year at renewal. If I answer dishonestly that's insurance fraud. Why then, is it okay for Owlet's parents to get away with lying to their insurance company? It's not, and I've just grown weary of bull, so I've stopped putting up with it. Not everybody, or even most people, would make the choice I would, and that's okay, but I was a doormat for too long and a lot of damage was done to me and my children as a result, and I won't apologize for refusing to be mistreated anymore.

I believe my parents own the house, I could be wrong but I don't think insurance / landlords / whatever can get involved in this situation unfortunately. So it seems it just going you be a constant struggle between my brother and I

BAM!! :D

I love your sass, remind me not to get on your bad side!! :D

You remind me very much of my mom. She was a doormat for many years but finally "emancipated" herself. She is tough but very fair and willing to compromise.

Sounds as if your brother is a typical oppositional sibling. Without parental support he will likely continue his bad behavior. Wonder if your parents would consider buying you an air cleaner? They have some "ownership" of the situation by virtue of their silent tolerance of his smoking.

Possibly, I talked to my Dad in the past about it and he'd say he'd look into it but never heard anything again. This was actually before I got Lincoln when I was just looking to clear the air a bit more for my rat since the brother rats I had almost constantly had some sort of sinus infection that never seemed to go away no matter what medicine I tried and such. I'll probably talk to him about it again this Friday when we take Lincoln to the vet.
