Aside from Parrot Forums, are any of you active on other forums?

I'm a member of Avian Avenue (another parrot forum) but haven't been there in a while. There's so many sub-forums that I just end up confused trying to figure out all the street-themed names of them, lol. A lot of diversity there.

I also belong to Doberman Talk forums, as I own a Doberman and have been a member there for years. All forums are different but this one in particular can have some pretty harsh comments from members. A lot of members, good reputable breeders included, felt forced to leave because of some people thinking they knew everything about everything. I was having difficulty with my breeder and communication and got SO much backlash from it that I ended up leaving it for a few years. I went back recently and some members are still quite harsh, but not AS bad as years ago.

I'm so glad I found this forum, page after page after page of invaluable information, a simple layout, down-to-earth members willing to give advice and help others.

I belong to several forums including a cockatiel forum, dog forum, cat forum, several breeder forums and other parrot groups on Facebook.

But this is my main one; the admin group here does an excellent job keeping the atmosphere calm and handling conflict, even when I'm the one out of line lol.

I also like the mix of people here. We come from a lot of different backgrounds and experience levels but we all have something to offer and something to learn and we all love our birds.

No hard feelings, all Ok Gail :D

PS I much prefer the forum software on Parrotforms.com to others which are hard work IMO.

RIP Gandalf and Big Bird, you are missed.
The only other forum I am deeply involved with is an aviation themed venue by invitation only. Airlinebuzz.com began as a diecast model enthusiast forum that widened into a haven for fellow professional pilots. It remains closed so we can discuss stuff on "social media" that won't get us fired! Been a member for nearly 20 years and have made many life-long friends. However, it has languished the last few years because of the dreaded forum-killer Facebook. The admin is attempting to re-invent and bolster the forum. Some days no more than a dozen or so members visit, but we are a dedicated bunch! About 10 years ago we added a political science sub-forum that nearly took it down! This is why I am so happy we do not permit such discussion at PF. Nothing can separate a group like politics and religion. That is what got me booted from a popular auto-enthusiast forum. I flocked to their lopsided polysci room like a moth to light and wow, it was brutal. Laughable now, but in the melee it was most distasteful! Should have exclusively hung out in the auto sections!!

You booted out Scott, find that hard to believe, their loss!

Yep nothing raises the hackles and gets blood boiling than a discussion on religion or politics. If a sub forum appears on here we will know the end is nigh :)

OMG I'm so embarrassed I totally forgot I'm a member of Talk Cockatiels (and that's all I own) LOL! I don't think I have many posts there but I like that this forum features all species, so you get a more diverse group of people.

I'm a member of Talkcockatiels, talkbudgies, and talkparrots. The parrots one isn't very active, and the cockatiel and budgie ones have rules against "speaking negatively" about people choosing to breed their birds. In some ways that can be good because it creates a safe place to ask questions, but it also rules out being direct when someone clearly has no business doing what they are doing, and I think it encourages excess breeding that wouldn't have happened otherwise. It's fairly well moderated but this is still my favorite. I'm pretty sure I'm a member of Avian avenue as well but I never found it to be nearly the community we have here.

One thing that I think the one-species forums lack is the over all "this is a parrot" perspective. I can't remember the examples right now but there have been several times on talkbudgies and talkcockatiels where I literally started my post with "you have to remember that they are parrots, and parrots have/need/do this or that specific thing" when addressing typical PARROT behaviors that are not necessarily typical or recognized as typical in that specific species.

I belong to several different forums like Macrumors and the like. But they are mostly places I go when I have a specific or technical question. This is my favorite of them all, because it's not just info and argument. There are nuanced discussions, and people seem sensitive to the responses. Online there's no facial expression, no tone of voice to convey additional layers of meaning, so exchanges can quickly degenerate into name calling and huffery. It's not just the mods - though they do a superb, caring job - people catch themselves, moderate themselves, and reach for understanding. Above all, it's about the parrots. Not the status of the owner, not bragging who's bird is the rarest or smartest or prettiest. It's about the birds, and how best to keep them healthy and happy and safe. Along the way plenty of love seems to get scattered around for the humans to scratch up.

I mean, we could all brag but everyone already knows MY birds are the best ;)

Jk, but I know what you mean! I'm part of one Facebook forum where it literally seems like a contest; who loves their birds more? PROVE IT!

People posting about how they chop 38 individual veggies each day, or switch out every single toy for new ones once a week, or wipe up every poop before it hits the ground or have a cage that costs more than their car.

Those aren't the things that make you a good parront. If you can manage all those super human feats, GREAT, but that's not what we are here for.

I personally need the support this forum provides, both in practical and emotional ways. Last year when we were at the vet constantly, trying everything we could to save Kono, members here propped me up emotionally and were so encouraging and I needed that because most of my "real life" friends, although they were sad that I was sad, just couldn't understand why I was such a mess, willing to spend so much money on her, why I was literally crying and staying home from events to be with her. But members also had some great advice on things to ask the vet about that I wouldn't have thought of. Knowing that my mind wasn't the only one working on it was SO IMPORTANT to me!

It's also one of the few places I can post pictures of my babies and people don't say things like "why is it naked? Ew! It's so ugly! Why do you like those?" Or "why is it in a harness? You are so weird."

Gail, And that is why I enjoy the RickeyBird Thread so very much!!! That keep'em coming back for more and the all out ROFLMAO moments!

And, the sheer number of Threads and Posts that reality breaks-out across the Parrot Forums.

Every week, I find myself learning several new things, writing them down and sharing them with my CAV.

I have a presents on a couple of other Forums that follow my joy of science and transportation.

Prior to starting on the Parrot Forums, I had visited at least a half-dozen other Parrot Based and did not find the knowledge base or the level of interaction and concern that members here have for each other Parrots and each other! From time to time when I am researching a topic, I will get links that will pull me back into a few of them for a couple of minutes. Just long enough to recall why I am here!

Yes, Mr. Boatster... I found this place to be the best after a lot of surfing.

Since I left New Mexico, I have had very little support/advice/camaraderie about parronting... specifically RICKEYBIRDonting...

Finding this community is the best thing that happened to me and the Rb since moving up North. Well, retirement was pretty good for us, too!
