A Cautionary Tale

You all know me here, though I have more sporadic in posting since my husband's sudden death, two years ago Thursday.

This weekend, the web server on which PetoftheDay.com DogoftheDay.com and CatoftheDay.com -- and our forum, Pet Talk, had a "catastrophic hard drive failure". Both the main drive and the backup are now dead. It was sudden, with no waring, and complete. Everything is gone.

I am still working up re-uploading all our archive pages, nearly 20 years worth for PetoftheDay, and 19 for DogoftheDay and CatoftheDay.

Keep backups, people! Especially of things like the forum and databases! I never backed up Pet Talk, and now I have lost two years worth of people's posts. I am heartsick about it, but will have to try to reinstall from the backup my husband - who understood all things technical completely - made before his death.

Re: A Cautionary Tale _ IMPORTANT NOTE

Another note for all the moderators, and admins - the backup vBulletin generates does not include all the attachments and icons and stuff when you restore it.

So you need to regularly - as regularly as you make your back-ups - download the directory of images and save that somewhere.

I currently have a file that is 14GB to upload for Pet Talk. The forum is up and walking - not quite running, a few things still don't work, but I am making progress.

And bless Kentickianne, she has been working with a company to try and retrieve lost items.
