WikiBeaks progress

To keep from cluttering the forums, I'll put the progress reports here.

So far, there is a very basic website up on Wix. It turns out this isn't a good platform for me, since it's based online, and uses up all my tiny bandwidth allotment. I won't do any more development on that platform. I used RapidWeaver in the past, and RW allows me to create websites off line, so I upgraded to the latest version and I'm working through the tutorials, guide books and use forums. I'll need to get some additional plug-ins for the software as soon as I figure out what is needed. It will include content management so multiple people could potentially add stuff.

I found a great little Mac tool called SimpleMind Lite - free in the Apple app store - to build mind maps. This is the best way I know to organize big projects in my head. I made a starter map for the website which is helping me to visualize the categories and to understand what needs to be on top. If you want a good laugh, here's a print of the first day's map:


The RapidWeaver forums are also filled with knowledgeable, helpful people so I am optimistic. I started to say "cautiously optimistic" but the truth is, I'm like kudzu. You can't knock me off a project. So I'm sure the website will get built and uploaded, and I'm sure the other details like recruiting a board and writing by-laws ad infinitum will also get done. My vision is to make WikiBeaks so interesting that people will WANT to be involved.

To do all this, I really have to focus. I deleted all the games of my devices and cut out all the time wasting activities I could, and I will pay attention to the website until it's up, so may not be posting as much. But I still read, and find so much encouragement in the ParrotForum universe.

Good Lord, I got lost in that map maze. And, that's difficult for me to admit!!! You're doing great work! Thank you, for what you are doing!!!


FYI: When referencing Parrot Forums, never place the word 'the' in front of it.

That’s cause you live in a land of broadband where the gigabytes are free! I did really love the fact that Wix didn’t make me learn anything. The downside - other than the data consumption - is that its really hard to change things around. You can only customize so much. I figure I might as well bite the big bullet and learn the software if I can. I enjoy it, really, the hours before the monitor just fly by. Maybe I have some mental problem that makes me want to do things the hard way!

I've never considered the thought and technical expertise necessary to bring a site to fruition! I like the current look of Wikibeaks; the colorful "building blocks" from top to bottom! It has an inviting ambiance with great information prominently displayed!

Not sure if this information is useful, I ran your efforts passed my son-in-law who is a front end developer. Highly accomplished, I am sure you have seen much of his work!

As far as working offline I️ would suggest she install an app called xampp it will allow them to create a localhost on their Mac and use php/sql so they can actively see what they are coding before uploading. The limited bandwidth sucks because if they are just learning then their head will be buried in forums and documentation as they learn.
The mindmap stuff is just the idea board so it seems they don’t know just yet what they want. Once they get a full list of features a kanban backlog would be helpful to organize the development tasks especially if it’s a multi person project.”

Actually understand some of this! Yes, I'm creating the site from scratch. Yes, my head has been buried in the the documentation and forums all afternoon. Starting with learning how to set up ftp on the new hosting platform. I have to consider myself a novice again - all my programming experience is what, almost 16 years outdated. And it does suck.

I figured out I can publish to a local folder, and check out the site first, then ftp the files up. That would take less bandwidth that having RW publish to the host. And there is a way to see the source, and eventually I'll look to see what's being generated and figure out how to streamline it. Eventually.

Yes, the MindMap is a mess because I don't know what I need at all. The map helps me visualize things...stuff things in categories and move them around...stare and reflect about what is it, exactly, that I want people to see and do? Where are the priorities? If I drew this out on paper or a spreadsheet, it would be harder to change around. This way, anytime I think of something I can just stick it in as a placeholder, and figure out the natural flow later. It helps keep me from forgetting about things.

The site has nothing to do with parrots - it's just practice. Gives me time to organize a structure for the real WikiBeaks site...

Got the website nearly rebuilt in RapidWeaver. I figured out a way to work completely offline, saving to my hard drive and running a local web server instead of uploading every change to test. Still some software gizmos to format the appearance I haven't figured out, but the major top level pages are in place at least. The RW community is so helpful to a noob like me, and some developers provide free/donate what you want tools that make the impossible possible. Next week I'll be where I can upload the work in progress. Don't want you to think I forgot!

This is all mind-blowing for me, but... I love you guys!

Today I was able to mooch of my sister's broadband to watch a bunch of training videos. I learned the basics of Markdown, and learned that I will have to redo the site using the Foundation template and stacks, but not today. Today I lean on the included templates. So I made a pass at replicating the site as it is. It isn't as pretty. I don't have the gradient backgrounds and nice scroll. But I think I found some tools that will do that. The first version is live at WikiBeaks and all the links work in Safari and Chrome on my laptop, haven't looked at tablet or phone yet. I probably should have finished working through the RapidWeaver manual first, but I got carried away. There's always tomorrow!

Love the site!!! Works well with the newest Firefox and the latest MAC OS!!!

Version 2 is live, sort of.

I really wanted to get the revised site published before the end of the year, and I sort of made it. The site has been uploaded to the practice domain, so it's still on the ruraleclectic serverWikiBeaks Secrets About Parrots until I can get the DNS information updated.

Tami, thanks for the notice. I don't get this error message. There was a copy of the website uploaded to another domain I own (ruraleclectic.com) before i published it to the correct domain (WikiBeaks Secrets About Parrots). Did you get the warning on that second site? And it wasn't from like a saved bookmark or something? I'm trying to track it down, because I don't get any warnings from any of my devices, and my friends say it's working fine. Does anybody else have this problem?

No, I typed in the address. It was only that 1 time for maybe about a 10 minute period , give or take. Eventually the address did work. I haven't rec'd that notice since. Weird....

The site looks awesome BTW.

Thanks for letting me know about this. Should be fixed now. I have an SSL certificate on the account, but it turns out it has to be manually applied to each domain. It might take a while to propagate, but the error should go away soon.
