Re: Future Plans / What You Do
Goof for you for going back to college!
I got a Bachelor's degree in Animal Science with a major in Biology. I love animals with a passion! But I have yet to find a job working directly with animals. Unfortunately for me if you want to work with animals for a living in Iowa you are either going to have to go to school to be a veterinarian or you get to work on either a cow farm or a kill floor. Vet technicians do get to work with animals but you need a technical degree here for that only 2 years but don't get paid very much. Zoos are an option but there are usually SO MANY applications that you need to have an in or have TONS of exotic animal experience. The closest I have gotten to working with animals/biology that paid decent was working at an ethanol plant. Ha! I did work in college on a beef farm but it was for grad studies and mostly hard labor, working in fields and hardly any interaction with the cows. Not exactly what I went to school for... Still, my passion for animals runs deep. Especially birds. I will likely end up being a bird breeder in the coming years -- it is something I am learning more about and becoming very passionate about. And since I have a progressing eye condition and will likely lose my driver's license in a few years it is okay because I can just ooh and ahh at all my baby birds and be my own boss! We all have a path, it may not be the one we envisioned but I believe everything happens for a reason! Thanks for sharing! Last edited by itzjbean; 04-20-2018 at 10:45 AM. |

sorry to be snide but. I been there - done that. He with the most toys does not win. I'm going the polar opposite. I want to do as little as possible and make nothing of it.

Re: Future Plans / What You Do
I'm just tired of having no path. Around where I live there are very few opportunities if you don't have some kind of education or experience. I've been out in the world with no qualifications, looking for work and the best I've gotten after applying for 50-100 applications is serving customers in food retail. I don't want to get stuck doing that for the rest of my life, I don't actually like talking to people let alone strangers. |

Re: Future Plans / What You Do
I'd much rather work with animals, even if it's for less money. ^^ |

Now considering an early retirement with more emphasis on caring for animals, in and out of my home. |

Re: Future Plans / What You Do
perhaps become an entrepreneur. save some money and invest in yourself. create projects that YOU want to do. buy some land build a farm or sanctuary. I refuse to accept that the only way to become someone in life is to get a degree, just seems way too narrow. watch youtubers that have built their owns projects and are living off it.

Re: Future Plans / What You Do
Others may criticize me for saying this but you need money to live. The better your salary the more comfortable your life is. The better your salary the more likely you will be able to enjoy doing what you want to do....be that volunteering at an animal shelter or rescuing animals yourself or whatever. If you want to someday actually work with animals and make a decent living from it you need to go back to school. My recommendation would be major in business and eventually get an MBA. Sounds boring I know, but with that business degree and MBA you'll be able you'll go to a bank and get a loan to open your dream business. Even if you decide to work for someone else the MBA is a great tool. My daughter went to college to become a vet, couldn't get through organic chemistry and eventually changed her major to English with a minor in journalism. Worked for many years in retail (Store managers) and at veterinary clinics as receptionist, non certified vet tech etc. Nothing paid well enough to give her disposable income. Eventually she got an MBA by going to school at night and now she is a Practice Manager at a Vet clinic with three Vets. She is the highest paid employee aside from the doctors. She get's to work with animals, observe surgeries and help out as a tech. She is happy. If you put yourself in a mindset that you're willing to "settle" for less, you've lost before you've begun. Get back to school! |
