A friend posted this on FB today, and when I played it, I heard Laurel, and my hubby heard Yanny. Some are saying it has to do with the pitch we hear, which makes some sense to me since my hubby & I have different birds whose scream hurts the worst.
Weird anyway!

Lord it’s the dress all over again. Don’t we already have enough tearing our society asunder??? :p

I very clearly hear Yanny. My though went to overtones, but that can’t really explain it given how clearly I hear the word. I’ve listened for overtones that could bend the phonics for me over to Laurel, but they just aren’t there.

Haha..these are so silly. It sounds like laurel for whatever it's worth. But what does it matter? Of real interest is any legitimate scientific explanation for the underlying difference in perception.

Ok, so I heard it on a different tv channel, clearly heard Laurel.

So I hear laurel clearly. I asked my husband what word he heard (WITHOUT telling him the 2 options) and he heard yanny (he actually said yammy before I told him). Weird.

Imagine the cumulative time and productivity wasted debating/tweeting about etc... this audio clip at workplaces and schools across the country. It's fun to indulge every once in a while, but these manufactured, faux controversies are why I've never signed up for social media (except a myspace when it very first came out and deleted a year or 2 later) and have abandoned other forums besides PF as I actually truly do feel a community here (though admittedly waste a lot of time here lol). Just you watch, this is probably some kind of promotion or ad.

I've been hearing Laurel, while my wife has been hearing Yanny. Quite intriguing, as the two sound nothing alike.

But the most important thing here is that Terry's link to that article on the subject proves me right! Laurel it is!

Preparing my "I was right" dance even as I type this! Should be ready by the time my wife gets home. :D

Let us know how that works out for you (if you can still type!)

When my S.O. played a video on his computer (not sure if same video or not? but it was in another Youtube video - Philip De Franco Show), we both *clearly* heard Yanny.

I see this thread, intrigued... I'm on my own computer (which, btw, is right next to my S.O.'s computer!) and it's Laurel. Huh...

I think it has to something to do with audio compression. Don’t fully understand it. But it’s tied to frequencies.

I heard Yanny yesterday. Laurel today. FWIW the dress would change from black to white while I looked at it.

First time I heard it, I heard a "Ya....eee" kind of sound, followed by several "Laura"s. When the local news station plays it now, I always hear "Laurel". But someone was playing it on an iPhone for people in the White House, and each time it sounded like "Yanny" - no hint of Laurel. I've heard the discussions about frequencies etc. and the most interesting thing to me is that I'm probably hearing neither of those words, but some compressed/uncompressed computer generated sound.
