My Mother always dreamed of Cockatoo. I'm not in the best situation in life but I want to make my mother happier. Is there any place where I can take a loan on a good conditions?

I think perhaps a BETTER solution in your situation would be to get your mother a lovely statue or perhaps art print of a cockatoo, not a living, breathing bird.

The cost of the bird itself is cheap compared to the upkeep costs of them! And I'm unsure where you live in the world, but unless you are buying an older bird off craigslist or something, no where in the US/UK/AU etc... will you be able to find any species of cockatoo (besides a cockatiel) for under $1000. Cage for a cockatoo will probably cost $400 in and of itself (if not more, they need a lot of room), in addition to another couple hundred on initial perches, toys, food etc... and figure with cockatoos being big time toy destroyers, probably $50-$100 PER MONTH on toys. Can your mother afford that? And what if the bird gets sick? My bird got sick and the FIRST vet visit was $350, and he needs to go back a second time to confirm the infection has cleared, which will be another $300 or so dollars. Think this through! If you can't even scrape $400 together, a large parrot is probably a bad call unless your parents can afford it, in which case it should be THEIR choice to buy one.

Owning a larger species such as a cockatoo will be a continued expense. Expect to pay $1800-2300 for a weaned baby, up to $1-2k for a big cage, $100 + for first vet visit, $300 on perches and toys and food per month. And that's for 40+ years. That means you need to be able to provide continued care with a stable income, unless you want to take out a loan for $30k.

Just something to think about. Why not a smaller and much more manageable species, like a cockatiel?

I don't know of any place that you can get a loan like that. Paypal may be able to give you credit.

I have found deals like the one you speak of for $400 on craigslist but be careful. A lot of them are scams. Most of the time the cages are not worth keeping and the toys and perches that come with them...well. Let's just say I usually get the bird and tell them to keep the cage.

If this is a friend...ask them if you can pay them in payments.

if you need a loan to buy a bird then don't

getting loans for non-necessities is the fastest way to spiral into uncontrollable debt

As for the bird itself, $400 for a Cockatoo is a scam. These birds are lucky to sell for anything lower than $1'000. That ad you are looking at is a SCAM

also speaking as a person who has been bought a pet before as a present, just don't do it. To suddenly thrust responsibility like that on others is unfair.

Just wanted to add that society6.com has numerous beautiful art prints of cockatoos in many price ranges and art styles that you can customize the size on as well as add a matte and/or frame to. Please reconsider gifting a live/extremely difficult and costly to care for animal even if you could find a loan and a bird for that price that isn't a scam. Instead, gift your mother something beautiful to cheer her up that doesn't require massive upkeep. I'm sure she will appreciate anything you give her and that you thought of her:)

Maybe get her a nice poster or somthing like that of a cockatoo? If she really has her heart set on a parrot maybe something like a budgie? Great little birds that are quiet easy to get, they are cheap, and with the right care can be just as great as other birds :)

I have one Umbrella, a Bare Eye, and two budgies.
Look on Craigslist. I got Fred for under a grand and his huge cage for under a hundred.

I have seen cockatoos listed for as cheap as one hundred dollars. Most people just want to get rid of the bird,...and fast.

If your looking for $400 for a cockatoo my guess would be that you’re from Australia? Check out RSPCA or parrot rescue Australia. There are a few cockatoos seeking to be re homed, with a $100 fee. Of course both places will monitor the bird to see if it’s being cared for. Cockatoos are quite a handful, are you sure that your mother actually wants one? Maybe you should sit down with her and discuss it. Maybe you could take her to a bird park, or just a park there are lots to see in the wild.
