I can't take it anymore! I got strep then the flu. ...Strep is gone. Now the flu is stuck in my chest. Anyone with any Flu hacks ??? Any old wives tales for dealing with? Any meds or any DIY to control coughing? This is day seven.....BTW be careful it's everywhere, went to Walmart for a fluid run, heard hacking from every corner if the store....

Oh you poor love you sound like you’ve got it bad! We’ve got a nasty one getting around here too, some of hubby’s workmates are on their second round of antibiotics!

Sorry i have zero hacks to help once you’ve got it, only some preventatives like a REALLY good probiotic (there’s a lotta rubbish ones out there that do nothing)

I sure hope you get better soon!

I don't take anything to reduce my fever (unless it were ever to go over 103, which is getting into a dangerously high range and should be addressed). Just lis of water, rest and allowing my immune system to do what it evolved to do. Fever is the bodies way of killing illness and bringing down a non-dangerous fever is just prolonging the illness. Coughing is the bodies way of removing mucus from the lungs and suppressing it is just prolonging that unpleasant symptom as well. That's my biggest 'flu hack' (last time I had the flu was 2009 and it only lasted 3 days with about a week of a residual cough)- just let your body handle it with minimal interference and know it'll be over eventually.

Hope you feel better soon!

Tis the season, I have to agree with Kiwibird, let your body use it's natural defenses to fight off the bugs if at all possible. I feel for you, strep is painful, I imagine it's even worse when followed by flu. Feel better.

If the hacking etc. is keeping you up- go get some over the counterstuff that helps tp resolve that.
(there are also a lot of herbal teas that will help, no idea what is availble in your corner
of the world, but anything that helps to liquefy the mucus is nice)

for hacking stuff up (I get that bad with any illness) get a good "chesty cough" cough medicine. Apart from that what I find works well is hot drinks (of any type, hot juice, tea, coffee, whatever as long as it's hot) comfort food, whatever you like and whatever you want sod 'healthy food' for now. Hot steamy baths to help your sinuses out and also to comfort you and to heat you inside so the virus gets killed off and your body needs to work less to heat up.

Last but not least get a good bottle of lucozade (with all them sugars) all the glucose and sugars will really help give your body some much needed energy, hence why it was originally used as medicine believe it or not. Out side of that just chill out and let your body do what it needs to do.

Don't worry about infecting your birdies, Flu is a viral bug so the odds of it passing to them is about 1/1'000'000'000'000'000'000'000.00 and if it were to spread to them there would be a much bigger worry for the safety of humanity if it did spread between species!

huh didn't realize the stuff wasn't available in america (at least readily) Essentially it's a drink that has a lot of glucose in it which gives you a load of energy that your body can put to good use unlike caffeine which just increases your heart rate. but anything with glucose in it is gonna be helpful in giving you a bit of a boost

Was curious, it is an energy/sport drink invented in Newcastle UK as a med, way back in 1927. Currently marketed by a Japanese company, available in the U.S. via Amazon. Possibly specialty sporting goods stores?

ehm.... you are worried about passing a viral-strain to your birds they are probably *not* susceptible to, but you ga bananaas with the vicks-stuf??
That stuf relies on releasing menthol(vapours) ... a huge irritant to birdy membranes.

My daughter just had the same thing, she goes to public school so its unavoidable. I normally try to just let it run its course withhout taking any medicine, but she had a stuffy nose along with the cough and was so miserable trying to sleep at night so I gave her some childrens Mucinex right before bed. Now my son has it, I made him some egg drop soup with lots of black pepper and some cayenne pepper. If you can handle hot and spicy soup, that helps to clear it up.

Much love, dear, so sorry!

Okay, if you can stand it...
Menudo, or pancita is a traditional Mexican soup, made with beef stomach in broth with a red chili pepper base. Hominy, lime, onions, and oregano are used to season the broth. Wikipedia
Main ingredients: Beef Tripe (cow stomach), broth, hominy, lime, onions, cilantro, oregano, red chili peppers
Place of origin: Mexico

Now that all non-Hispanics (and some Hispanics) have started to gag...

Scroll on!

I feel your pain, I'm so sorry to hear you are sick.

I tend to catch colds easily, and the flu every other year (despite getting flu shots), and it always turns into bronchitis for me. Last year I got Pneumonia and the cough took 5 months to go away. My doctor always told me to take Mucinex. Get a daytime formula to loosen things up and make it easier to cough it all out, and a nighttime formula to suppress the cough so you can sleep. That's what helped me, along with lots of nice warm tea. Mint, chamomile, lemon, or orange teas always felt nicest to me. Breath in the steam and it helps you feel better. A long hot shower helps too.

Good luck and get well!!!

Umbrella Cockatoo- 15? years old..I think?
Ugh, that sucks. Sorry you are having such a rough time!
Don't know if any of this is new, but here goes:

Raw garlic is a good immune booster (you can crush it and add it to water, then take it as a shot without chewing it..you will likely smell like garlic, but if sick, it doesn't matter much lol). Raw honey (raw is key) mixed with apple cider vinegar and water as a drink, elderberry extract has anti-viral properties, chunks of raw ginger can help respiratory issue, lots of water, expectorant (Mucinex) to get the junk out of your lungs, staying warm, avoiding sugar/processed carbs, avoiding dairy (can thicken mucous), zinc helps immune system too...Thera-Flu kind of works sometimes (but it contains acetaminophen), spicy food can clear things out too (or cayenne added to drinks), sleep, and soups. You can boil water (preferably distilled) and then inhale the steam, or try putting towels under bathroom door and running the shower with the fan off and water as hot as it gets (sit on the toilet and breathe it in). Do not push yourself to be as active as you think you should be if you start feeling better---body still will be healing. That having been said, sitting up and walking around a bit can be healthier than being on your back all day.

Oh---and in a coughing fit, drink very warm water (not cold). It settles it somehow.
